Life Insurance and Disability Benefits

Life and Disability Benefits Provided by NSU

Short Term Disability (STD) is available for eligible employees working 19.2 hours or more per week at NSU and who have successfully completed 90 days of employment.

STD is provided by NSU at no cost to employees, no action is required to participate in this program.

STD is a self-funded program (not an insurance product) designed to provide reduced salary benefits to eligible participants under the terms and conditions of the Program in accordance with NSU policy. The program is administered by NSU by the university’s designated leave administrator.

Long Term Disability (LTD) is available for eligible employees working 19.2 hours or more per week at NSU and who have successfully completed 90 days of employment.

LTD is provided by NSU at no cost to employees, no action is required to enroll in this benefit.

LTD is an insurance product designed to provide reduced salary benefits to eligible participants who become totally disabled under the terms and conditions of the Program. LTD is administered by Reliance Standard.

Basic Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance provided to employees working 19.2 hours or more per week.

Basic Life Insurance and AD&D are provided by NSU at no cost to employees, no action is required to enroll in these benefits.

Employees working 19.2. hours or more per week are provided with Basic Life and AD&D at no cost. Basic Life Insurance is the equivalent of an employee’s annual base salary (does not include overtime or overload).


Optional Insurance Benefits

Group Whole Life Insurance provided through MassMutual.

The Group Term Whole Life Insurance provided by MassMutual is fully portable and grows CASH value over time.  Guaranteed coverage up to $100,000.00 and express issue coverage up to $200,000.00 (no exam, questions only) when enrolling during your New Hire Enrollment period.

Enrollment in whole life is made during your new hire enrollment period through the ICUBA Enrollment Portal, this is an OPTIONAL benefit requiring an election and premium payment.

Group Term Life Insurance provided through Reliance Standard.

Rates for the Group Term Life Insurance are age banded (increase every 5 years) for policy increments of $10,000.00.  Guaranteed coverage is available up to $300,000.00 for newly hired employees or when employees make changes during an IRS Section 125 qualifying life event.  Changes made during the annual Open Enrollment period require the completion of an Evidence of Insurability form.

Enrollment in term life is made during your new hire enrollment period through the ICUBA Enrollment Portal, this is an OPTIONAL benefit requiring an election and premium payment.  The Group Term Life Insurance is an age reduced policy.

Elected coverage decreases to 65% of the benefit at age 65 and 50% of the benefit at age 70.
