Check-in Upon Arrival

F-1 International Student Check-In

All F-1 students on initial* NSU I-20s must attend an F-1 International Student Check-In in order to have their SEVIS records registered and activated.  

*This includes all students on initial NSU I-20s, including students who have transferred from another institution, students who are starting a new program at NSU, and students who are in the middle of their NSU program but have been issued a new initial I-20 for another reason (following a termination, leave of absence, etc.)

Step #1:  Complete the F-1 Check-In

The Check-In Process varies depending on your situation.  Please refer to the information below to determine what you must to do to complete your F-1 Check-In:

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Undergraduate students attending classes on the main Fort Lauderdale (main) campus must complete an in-person F-1 Check-In.  The in-person F-1 Check-In is delivered during the International Student Orientation.

Students who fail to complete an F-1 check-in will have hold placed on their account, preventing their registration in a future term.

GRADUATE & PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS

Graduate and Professional students attending classes on the main Fort Lauderdale (main) campus are strongly encouraged to complete an in-person F-1 Check-In.  The in-person F-1 Check-In is delivered during the International Student Orientation.

Alternatively, graduate students have the option of completing the fully online F-1 Check-In course in Canvas.  Students will fail to attend the in-person F-1 Check-In will be added to this course. Students who fail to complete an F-1 check-in will have hold placed on their account, preventing their registration in a future term.

If you are in your first program at NSU and are attending classes on one of our Regional Campuses, you have two options:

  • Attend the person F-1 Check-In on the Fort Lauderdale campus:  The in-person F-1 Check-In is delivered during the International Student Orientation.  Visit the International Student Orientation page to determine when your F-1 Check-In will be held.
  • Complete an online F-1 Check-In:  Please contact intl@nova.edu to be added to the online F-1 Check-In.  Students who do not attend the in person F-1 Check-In will automatically be added the the online F-1 Check-In after the International Student Orientation date has passed.

Students who fail to complete one of these options will have hold placed on their account, preventing their registration in a future term.

Students who are on an initial I-20 because they are in a new program or are returning after an absence may complete the F-1 Check-In online:
  • Please contact intl@nova.edu to be added to the online F-1 Check-In.

Step #2:  Submit Your F-1 Check-In Documents

  • All students are required to submit the required F-1 Check-In Documents before their SEVIS record can be activated.  
  • Your SEVIS record will be activated approximately 5-7 business days after you submit your F-1 Check-In Documents.
  • SEVIS activations must be completed 24-72 hours before students are able to apply for a Social Security Number or Driver's License.  
  • You will need your NSU username and password to be able to submit your F-1 Check-In Documents.
