Medical Plans

At NSU you can choose between two different ICUBA PPO medical plans administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS): the Preferred PPO Plan and the High Deductible PPO Plan.

The following benefits are included when you enroll in any of the plans described above. (No additional enrollment is needed)

In addition, you will be automatically enrolled in a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) which is an employer-funded health spending account that can be used to offset out-of-pocket costs for eligible medical, dental, vision, pharmacy, and over-the-counter expenses for ALL covered members.

HRA funds will be accessible through an Ameriflex debit card that will be mailed along with your BCBS medical card.

HRA contributions are monthly and begin at the end of your second month of participation in an ICUBA medical insurance plan and continue as long as you remain enrolled.

See table below for the 2023-2024 monthly premiums and HRA contribution amounts.

Medical Insurance from BlueCross BlueShield will be updated at the close of the business day following your new hire enrollment or the approval of the life event by the Office of Human Resources.

Example: A life event approved on Friday will be updated with BlueCross BlueShield before the end of the following Monday and your benefit election will be active in their system on Tuesday morning (actual effective dates of coverage are based on the life event documentation submitted).

Separating from NSU

Separating from NSU
Whether you are leaving NSU to pursue new opportunities or retiring, there are a few things you should know about your benefits once your employment ends. Below you'll find information and resources to help you navigate your benefits when separating service from the university.
  • Most of your benefits will end at midnight on the last day of the month during which the termination occurs. You will be billed for the full month's premiums. Income Protection coverage (Basic and Voluntary Life/AD&D, Disability) ends on the date of termination.
  • If you are a Puerto Rico employee, you will be e-mailed the Triple-s disenrollment form to be signed and e-mailed back.
  • Notification for eligibility to continue coverage under the provisions of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) will be sent to you via US Mail within 14 days of your last date of employment. See COBRA Premiums
