New Grading Format (2018-2019)

Historically, NSU colleges have determined their own grading schemas. Many colleges have established a schema for their master’s programs and another for their doctoral programs. Some colleges even allow different schemas across the same level. The ability for colleges to set individual grading schemas produces issues as the university looks to increase the number of cross-disciplinary programs and move programs from existing colleges to new colleges. Therefore, Provost Rogers approved of the new grading format to take effect for the 2018-2019 academic year. There are no grading issues at the undergraduate level since all programs utilize the same grading schema.

Frequently Asked Questions

Under the old grading scale, NSU colleges and programs use different quality points to determine a student’s grade point average. This change will lend consistency to all graduate/professional students who attend classes at NSU.

The new grading format will become effective in the 2018-2019 academic year. For most programs, this change will begin in fall 2018 (201920); however, programs with summer headers will start the new format in summer II 2018 (201850).

All graduate/professional-level students will fall under the new grading format beginning with the 2018-2019 academic year. The only exception to this rule will be students who are currently receiving numeric grades. Those student will be “taught out” under their current format. However, all new first-year students in those programs will fall under the new grading format.

No. The change has been approved by the university’s administration and will affect all graduate/professional students (except for the exceptions previously stated) once implemented.

First-year graduate/professional-level students in programs that have up until now graded in numbers will, but for all others, only the quality points of grades may change. By submitting the change form as instructed to courserequests@nova.edu, programs will select the grades they wish to have tied to their particular level student.

Yes. It is very important that colleges list the two quality-point scales in their student handbooks. Grades earned prior to the change in format will not be recalculated with the new quality points.

Some compromise may be necessary if programs within a certain level cannot agree on one grade format (i.e., some programs stick to the more-conventional grading of A, B, C, etc., while others  wish to use plus/minus letter grades). In those instances, instructors will need to be informed as to which grades are valid for their particular class.
