Civic Engagement Initiatives

Nova Southeastern University’s designation as a community engaged institution was reaffirmed in 2015 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching which is a prestigious designation that is earned after a rigorous process that also includes a self-study. NSU was awarded the community engaged designation in both categories, “Curricular Engagement” and in “Outreach and Partnerships.” Please click here for a complete definition. NSU is also proud to have earned the designation of high research, making it one of only 37 universities that holds that dual-designation.

Florida Campus Compact

As a member of the Florida Campus Compact, Nova Southeastern University is committed to developing students that are civically engaged and serve the communities they are in by improving the lives of others.

To achieve this goal, the Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement actively participates regionally as well through the South Florida Campus Compact to actively identify and meet the social needs of Broward County. To date, the SFLCC has identified the following social needs of particular importance:

  • Poverty
  • Access to affordable quality health care
  • Educational disparities

President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, launched in 2006, annually highlights the role colleges and universities play in solving community problems and placing more students on a lifelong path of civic engagement by recognizing institutions that achieve meaningful, measureable outcomes in the communities they serve.

Carnegie Foundation: Community Engagement Classification for Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships

Nova Southeastern University earned the Carnegie Foundation’s prestigious category as a community engaged higher education institution in January 2010. NSU earned this recognition through a rigorous process that included a self-study submission.
