Lubov Nathanson, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Nova Southeastern University

Voluntary Assistant Professor, Dept. of Medicine, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL

Dr. Lubov Nathanson is an experienced, versatile and multidisciplinary trained scientist with over 20 years of work experience in basic and translational genomics and proteomics research. She has a combined expertise in bioinformatics, molecular biology, biochemistry and systems biology. As an Associate Professor for the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine, her work involves analysis of gene expression data of microarrays and RNA-seq experiments, analyzing systems biology including metabolic pathways and gene ontology, building gene interaction networks, creating custom pathways, and searching for upstream and downstream gene interactions.

Additionally, she is an Adjunct Professor of the Master's of Science in Nutrition Program in the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine and an Adjunct Professor of the Math, Science, and Technology Division in the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography.

  • Gender Differences in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • This study aims to understand the mediators of persistence and relapse in men with ME/CFS, as we have in women. We will approach this by: (i) integration across several of the body’s regulatory systems of data and knowledge collected from disparate sources, and (ii) mapping of the coordinated interactions between these physiologic systems and the potential for dysfunctional signaling networks. This project will extend this modeling of immune regulatory pathways and pathways that regulate latent viral expression in a way that will enable us to compare gender differences in illness mechanisms and explore gender-specific therapeutic targets. My role is to design, conduct and interpret experiments involving genomics, such as microarrays and Nanostring. Results of these projects will help to identify the mediators of persistence and relapse in men with ME/CFS at the level of transcription.

  • Genomic Approach to Find Female-Specific Mechanisms of GWI Pathobiology
  • The main objective of this research is to better understand GWI pathobiology in women and provide insight into sex-specific disease onset and progression, with the goal of discovering potential therapeutic targets of GWI.

  • Regulation of cardiac progenitor cell response to inflammation by autophagy
  • My role is to perform analysis of gene expression and differential splicing to identify inflammation-related genes/pathways that are perturbed due to autophagy modulation in human mesenchymal stromal cells.

  • Immunomodulation in GWI
  • The main objective of this project is to determine changes in the transcriptional regulation in each of the four major subtypes of immune cells (helper T cells, cytotoxic T cells, B cells, and NK cells) caused by GWI and identify the role of cell-cell communication in pathobiology of GWI,

  • Effect of ME/CFS on epigenetic regulation in specific immune cell types
  • The goal of this study is to identify changes in the epigenetic regulation in each of the six main subtypes of immune cells caused by ME/CFS: T helper cells, cytotoxic T cells, B cells, NK cells, dendritic cells and monocytes in order to determine, how epigenetic profile of each cell population is affected by the disease.

  • Effect of ME/CFS on cell-to-cell communication
  • The objective of this research proposal is to identify differences in exosomal RNA content between patients diagnosed with ME/CFS and healthy controls. We intent to understand whether the RNA content of plasma exosomes participate in dis-regulation of immune function in ME/CFS patients.

  • Next generation sequencing to identify infectious pathogenesis of ME/CFS
  • The purpose of this project is to identify infectious pathogens using Next Generation Sequencing in patient with ME/CFS.
