CALL: 1-800-SUICIDE (784-2433) 911 - Emergency
On November 12, 2017, the Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority will be partnering with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to host the annual Broward County Out of the Darkness Walk at NSU. The Office of Suicide and Violence Prevention will be joining the NSU College of Psychology for this event as we walk to raise funds and spread suicide awareness in our local community.
Each year, AFSP works with organizations throughout the country to hold community walks as a fundraiser for suicide prevention and mental health awareness programs. Through its 85 local branches, AFSP is able to provide events in all 50 states, bringing awareness to communities and serving as an important source of fundraising. For each dollar raised through Out of the Darkness Walks, eighty cents goes directly to programs such as distributing educational DVDs, bringing educational programs to high school and college campuses, training for mental health professionals, and sponsoring advocacy at a state-wide level. In 2016, over 240,000 individuals participated in AFSP Out of the Darkness Walks across the United States, resulting in more than $20.8 million raised.
The 2017 Broward County Out of the Darkness Walk will be held on NSU’s main campus in Davie, FL on November 12, 2017 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, with check-in and day-of registration opening at 8:00 am. Registration is also available online up until 12:00 pm on Saturday, November 11. Individuals who wish to register as part of the College of Psychology team may do so by selecting the “Join a Team” option when registering online, followed by searching for “NSU College of Psychology”.
