The Resident Assistant (RA) is the core of the Student Affairs staff in Nova Southeastern University residence halls. RAs play a critical role in individual student and community growth and development. The quality of their efforts has a significant, direct bearing upon the quality of life experienced by all members of the university community.
RA applications for the 2026-2027 academic year open Monday, November 3, at 12 p.m. and closes Friday, January 9, at 11:59 p.m.
NSU Resident Assistant Perks
- Must be a registered student at Nova Southeastern University, meeting the minimum academic requirements of the academic department.
- Undergraduate students must have a minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA.
- Must have one semester live-in experience prior to Fall 2026, not necessarily at NSU, or significant leadership experience. Must be in good judicial standing with the university (i.e., not above Written Warning).
- Willingness to make a commitment through the academic year (i.e., August - May) including training periods which begin approximately two weeks before the start of undergraduate fall classes.
- While in the RA position, any outside employment or internship is discouraged and must be approved by the Director of Residence Life.
- Must be an undergraduate student.
- Must be able to work and or be on an on-call rotation on weekends and holidays.
Community Involvement and Development
- Strive and actively engage to develop a sense of community among residents on the floor and an identity as a floor, hall, and residential community member.
- Assist in residents developing communication, time management, well-being skills, and competencies as well as affinity for NSU.
Individual Student Engagement
- Develop an open and genuine relationship with each resident while maintaining a high level of visibility and availability in your community.
- Learn about residents’ concerns, interests, and needs and work to provide engagement opportunities that are informed from knowledge gained from residents.
Recognition and Support
- Display interest and sensitivity to the concerns of our diverse population and refer residents, when necessary, to NSU and community resources.
- Recognize and celebrate the uniqueness of your residents and the NSU community.
Safety and Security
- Ensure the residence hall is a safe and secure environment to support residents.
- Communicate housekeeping and maintenance needs in a timely manner and follow up with appropriate parties.
Upholding Standards
- Encourage compliance with University policy and Residential Life policy by serving as a role model and addressing concerns around standard not being met.
- Educate residents about applicable policies and their responsibility to the larger NSU community.
Administrative Skills
- Complete the "on duty" responsibilities for your community.
- Complete administrative tasks that require accurate and timely execution.
Communication and Teamwork
- Demonstrate proficiency at expressing ideas and listening, asking for and providing productive feedback, and develop an effective communication style.
- Commitment and support to the Residence Life team.
- Meet with your Financial Adviser
- Cannot hold another student employment position
- No outside employment unless approved by Director
- International RA applicants
***Note for ALL International Students***
Non-resident Aliens (NRA) attending NSU on an F or J visa, who receive an NSU Institutional scholarship for non-qualified expenses such as housing, meal plans, health insurance fees or stipends, are subject to NRA withholding. All colleges and universities in the United States are required by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to withhold 14% of any scholarships issued for the purpose of non-qualified expenses. Applications open on Monday, November 3, at 12 p.m. and close on Friday, January 9, at 11:59 p.m. In addition, there will be five live Q&A sessions where you can ask questions and receive guidance from professional staff and current RAs. These sessions will cover the selection process, RA responsibilities and tasks, and provide clarification and support to help you throughout the application process.
