International Student Orientation (ISO)

The International Student Orientation is mandatory and provides critical information for students to understand how to maintain a valid immigration status at NSU and within the United States.

Winter 2020 International Student Orientation

Saturday, January 4, 2020

11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Required Portion Begins at 12:00 p.m.
Horvitz Administration Building - Welcome Center - Room 114
Register for the WINTER 2020 international student orientation


Note: Failure to complete the International Student Orientation will result in a registration hold placed on your student account, preventing your course registration in future terms.


[OPTIONAL] 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.: International Student Orientation Leaders will be available to help students obtaining their student IDs and parking passes and other One-Stop-Shop services. 

12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m.: Welcome & Introductions

12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.: Maintaining Your F-1 Status [Mandatory Immigration Session]

  • Maintaining valid documents
  • Registering for a full course of study
  • Accepting employment only as authorized
  • Traveling in F-1 status

1:30 p.m. - 2:15 p.m.: International Student Topic Roundtables led by International Student Orientation Leaders

  • Immigration, Government, & Employment: Driver's Licenses, Social Security Numbers, and On-Campus Jobs
  • Student Life: Textbooks, faculty office hours, academic resources and getting involved
  • South Florida Life: Shopping, eating, health care, entertainment and culture shock

2:15 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.: Wrap Up

[OPTIONAL] 2:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.: Campus Tours


NOTE:  Snacks will be provided but no meals will be served.

In addition to any questions you have about being an F-1 student or joining the NSU community, please bring the following:

  • NSU I-20
  • Valid passport with F-1 visa
  • I-797 Notice of Action if F-1 status was obtained through Change of Status 
  • Car registration (if interested in obtaining an NSU parking permit)

Campus Map - The Horvitz Administration Building is #1 on this map, located at 3301 College Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33314.  Room 114 is located inside the Welcome Center, on the first floor.

Parking Map - There is limited free visitor parking in the Horvitz South Lot (only for vehicles that DO NOT have an NSU parking decal).  Otherwise, paid parking is available in the Horvitz North Lot and Horvitz South Lot.  Pay by phone using information posted in the lots. 

Students attending one of NSU's Regional Campuses are welcome to attend the in-person International Student Orientation but are not required to travel to Fort Lauderdale.  Regional campus students who choose not to attend will have the option of completing the mandatory International Student Orientation in an online setting.  Additional details will be provided during the second week of the term.

All NSU students on initial I-20s (including students who have previously studied at NSU) will need to also complete the International Student F-1 Check-In in order to have their SEVIS registration record and maintain valid F-1 status.
