Policies and Procedures

Group Lessons

You are responsible for being on time to all class sessions. If the participant is late, the instructor(s) will not schedule a make-up session. The same goes for classes that are missed entirely. If a participant does not arrive within 15 minutes after the start time for the lesson, the instructor has the right to leave or start another lesson. Lessons will not be made-up or refunded for tardiness or absence.

No refunds will be assessed for days a learner misses during a session or once a session starts. However, a total refund can be assessed only if a session is cancelled in its entirety by NSU Aquatics or a refund is requested prior to 48 hours of the start time of the session. If a refund is requested in less than 48 hours of the scheduled start time, a $35 cancellation fee will be deducted from the refund amount. Once a session starts, no refunds will be given.

Swim lessons will be cancelled in the event there is an inclement weather warning. Inclement weather is defined as:

  1. Sound or sight of thunder and/or lightning in the area by the lifeguard staff, instructors, or administrators.
  2. NSU's Lightning warning system gives an alert
  3. Air temperature is below 65 degrees.

It is NSU Aquatics policy that all patrons must clear the pool and deck area for any of these warnings. Swim lessons will resume once 30 minutes has passed from the last sound or sight of thunder and/or lightening or NSU's warning system gives an all clear. Every effort will be made to contact parents/participants if it is suspected that your swim lesson will be cancelled for the day.

Private lessons offer participants flexibility in setting their own schedule and determining the number of lessons. Before registering, you must build a schedule. You may also select a preferred instructor. We cannot guarantee an instructor of your choice but every effort will be made to do so. When building a schedule, all lessons must be concluded in the specified time period. No lessons will not be carried over to the next semester. Semesters are fall, winter, and summer. Once your schedule and instructor is approved, the Coordinator will email you the registration link to complete online payment.  Registration and payment must be completed before the first lesson begins. If the registration is not completed in a timely manner, your schedule and instructor may be forfeited. Once a final schedule is set, it must be followed by the participant. Please refer to our make-up lesson and cancelation policies for more information.

Make-up days for private swim lessons will ONLY be scheduled in the event that an entire class is cancelled due to inclement weather. The make-up lesson will be scheduled at the discretion of both the instructor and participant and is subject to approval by the coordinator. Private make-up lessons must be completed within the specified semester (fall, winter, summer). Any lessons not completed within that semester will be forfeited and no make-up or refund will be assessed. In addition, instructors are not allowed to teach private swim lessons at home residences due to personal safety and liability concerns so please do not solicit them to do so.

  • All sessions must have at least 2 participants signed up or the entire session will be cancelled
  • Cancellations of entire sessions without penalty will occur 48 hours before the first day of class.
  • Any session that is cancelled due to lack of participants will be refunded and/or moved to the following session.
  • If an individual class has to be cancelled due to unforeseeable circumstances, NSU Aquatics will do everything we can to make up the class at a later date, but make up sessions are not guaranteed. Please see our make-up lesson policy.

We ask all parents to help us keep our pools healthy and safe for all users.  In order to do this, we ask that all patrons with kids:

  • Change diapers in a bathroom or a diaper-changing area; never on deck.
  • Wash your child thoroughly (especially the rear end) with soap and water before swimming.
  • Never swim or allow your child to swim with diarrhea. You can spread germs in the water and make other people sick.
    • If a child becomes ill with diarrhea they must refrain from the pool a minimum of 2 weeks AFTER the symptoms have gone.  This is for the prevention of spreading recreational water illnesses such as Cryptosporidium. Please notify your instructor and the coordinator ASAP so they are aware of the illness. If the instructor and coordinator are not notified in a timely manner, the missed lessons will be automatically forfeited. No refunds will be assessed for illness however, if a child receives less than four lessons, we may re-enroll the child in another session contingent upon availability. No lessons will be scheduled after the last session date. A physician note may be requested before re-enrollment.
  • For more info about healthy swimming, visit www.cdc.gov/healthyswimming

Parents may not leave the pool deck during the swim lessons. They must be available to take a child to the bathroom if the child needs to go during a lesson as swim instructors and lifeguards cannot leave the other youth in order to take them. Parents, siblings, friends, and anyone else not registered for the swim lesson may not enter the water unless it is during a parent/child aquatics class. Only one parent or caregiver per child during parent/child aquatic classes is allowed.

Swim diapers are required on all children who are not potty trained. Only approved bathing suits (non-cotton or containing any metallic parts) are allowed in our pools. The lifeguards have the ultimate decision on what is acceptable and what is not. Inflatable toys and arm floaties are not allowed.

There are locker rooms directly across the pool deck for your use during lessons. No deck changing is allowed at any of our pools.

The instructors have the ultimate discretion on which class level is best for a youth and have the right to switch a child into a higher or lower level class.

If you feel a swim instructor, lifeguard, or other Recreation and Wellness staff does not provide a sufficient level of customer service, please contact the aquatics coordinator at (954) 262-6804. All patrons will be given the opportunity to fill out an evaluation form at the completion of the session.

If a class is full (8 participants per instructor), then you can be added to a waitlist. If an opening becomes available, you will be immediately notified via email.

Occasionally, if we get enough interest on a waitlist, we will try to schedule another class.

A spot is non-transferable under any circumstances—a person who has a spot cannot "give" one's spot to you. The person must drop the course by contacting NSU Aquatics and the first person on the waiting list to sign up will gain it.

Your lessons will be held in the Recplex Pool that is located inside the Don Taft University Center. A campus map can be found HERE . We are located at 23C on the map. You will need your NSU SharkCard to get through the turnstiles. If you do not have a NSU SharkCard, you will need to let the front desk staff know that you are here for group lessons. If you need help finding the correct pool, the front desk staff will also be able to assist you. The instructor and/or the coordinator will be waiting for you the first day of your lessons at the front desk.
