The Center for Teaching and Learning is a resource for improving faculty practices and student learning within the classroom. Monthly seminars on a variety of instructional issues are offered free of charge to any interested NSU faculty member. Faculty counseling is available as is observation of and feedback on classroom performance. The Center for Teaching and Learning also provides rapid e-mail responses to quick questions.
The center produces and maintains a Faculty Instructional Handbook, which offers a wealth of practical advice on the mechanics of starting a class and improving teaching methods. The center’s library of books and videotapes on teaching is available to loan to interested faculty members on a first-come, first-served basis. The center hosts an annual new faculty orientation to inform incoming faculty of the services it offers.
Below are links to seven modules created by the Center for Teaching and Learning and the IZone. The modules feature faculty members from the Health Professions Division and the Fischler College of Education.
These modules were created to give faculty instruction in the basic elements of effective teaching strategies. Each module contains a series of videos, a PowerPoint presentation, suggested readings, and a quiz.

This module presents setting the tone of a class, the role of the instructor, important components of syllabus, and demonstrating leadership skills. Faculty members choosing to work through this module will gain a better understanding of the various roles an effective teacher must play.
Getting Started Module
This module presents information on lecturing, classroom questioning techniques, and active learning—even for courses with large enrollments. Faculty members choosing to work through this module will gain skills to improve their classroom presentations.
Planning and Delivering a Presentation Module
This module presents information on the audio/visual and technological aspects of presenting content to students. Faculty members choosing to work through this module will gain understanding of how to enrich their presentations with effective use of visuals and videos.
Presenting in the Classroom Module
This module presents information on teaching small groups, dealing with problem students, and doing small group work even in large classes. Faculty members choosing to work through this module will be able to take advantage of the benefits of using small groups for active learning and peer-to-peer teaching.
Teaching Small Groups Module
This module presents information on creating and scoring a variety of standard assessment tools: essay questions, true/false questions, matching questions, and multiple choice questions. Faculty members choosing to work through this module will gain a better understanding of what constitutes good question writing and will learn best practices for scoring different types of questions.
Assessment Part I Module
This module presents information on understanding the statistical analysis of multiple choice test questions and tests: p values, point bi-serials, item difficulty, item discrimination, test reliability, and standard error of measurement. Faculty members choosing to work through this module will be able to use the statistical analysis provided by the Testing Center to determine the quality of their test questions and tests.
Assessment Part II Module
This module presents information on ways other than examinations for students to show mastery of material or physical skills. Topics covered include journaling, portfolios, oral exams, and demonstrations. Faculty members choosing to work through the module will learn about other ways in which students can be assessed.
Alternative Assessment Module
Due to budget constraints, there will be no HPD Educational Research Grant for fiscal year 2018-19. Researchers are encouraged to submit proposals to the HPD Research Committee instead. Those forms may be found at https://www.nova.edu/hpdresearch/hpdresearch_committee/index.html
All NSU faculty are welcome to attend the Center for Teaching and Learning's faculty development seminars.
Unless otherwise noted, the seminars are held in the Chancellor's Dining Room, 5th floor of the Terry Building, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided.
