Discover a World of BEDI Events and Programming

September marks the beginning of an exciting academic year at Nova Southeastern University, with the fall semester in full swing and a vibrant calendar of events taking place across campus. From academic conferences and student organizations to cultural celebrations like Hispanic Heritage Month, there’s an array of opportunities for learning, networking, and community building. This month is also a critical time to foster belonging, equity, diversity, and inclusion (BEDI) as NSU kicks off key initiatives and programs that reflect our commitment to an inclusive campus highlighted in the Calendar of Events below. Find out more about the BEDI Advisory Council Original programming and events such as:

  • Empower Her Series: monthly lunchtime sessions focused on topics that promote education on issues such as gender equity and economic security for women organized by the NSU AAUW Chapter and sponsored by the BEDI Advisory Council. Join the first discussion on September 23 on "Drivers of Conflict: Unlocking Effective Resolution Strategies." Find registration details below.
  • Heroes of a Thousand Faces: monthly lunchtime sessions focused on the untold stories and celebrating the Hero of a Thousand Face Project that aims to tell the one thousand stories of men from the African diaspora from all ages and walks of life to help provide a greater perspective on who black men are and the contributions they make to society. Join us on September 18 for this event sponsored by the Alvin Sherman Library, Heroes of a Thousand Faces, and the BEDI Advisory Council.
Here are also some notable commemorations for September.
  • September 2 - Labor Day: A celebration of the contributions of workers across all sectors, Labor Day recognizes the achievements and progress made in advocating for fair labor practices and the dignity of work.
  • September 10 - World Suicide Prevention Day: A day dedicated to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting actions to prevent suicide. It's an important reminder of the value of mental health support and care.
  • September 15 - October 15 - Hispanic Heritage Month: Honoring the rich cultural, social, and historical contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans, this month-long celebration highlights the diversity and impact of the Hispanic community.
  • September 15-16 - Mawlid al-Nabi: Mawlid al-Nabi commemorates the birth of the Prophet Muhammad and is observed with prayers, recitations, and reflections on his teachings by Muslim communities worldwide.
  • September 18 - International Equal Pay Day: Recognizing the ongoing effort to close the gender wage gap, this day advocates for equal pay for work of equal value, regardless of gender, and raises awareness of wage inequality globally.
  • September 23 - Bi Visibility Day: Celebrating the bisexual community, Bi Visibility Day promotes awareness, acceptance, and inclusion of individuals who identify as bisexual, fostering understanding of their experiences.
  • September 23 - International Day of Sign Languages: This day highlights the importance of sign languages as a critical means of communication for the deaf community, promoting linguistic diversity and inclusion.
  • September 24 - National Voter Registration Day: Voting is a fundamental way for individuals to participate in shaping their community and society. National Voter Registration Day serves as a reminder to take part in this important process by ensuring voter registration is up to date.

We welcome events that respect different cultures and social backgrounds, including race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, ability, religion, and age. To be eligible for selection, the events must meet the following criteria:  
1) promote belonging, 2) allow for equity, 3) showcase diversity, and 4) provide an inclusive environment.
