Shark Preview Weekend

SHARK PREVIEW WEEKEND UPDATE: 

If you were confirmed to attend a Shark Preview Weekend on March 19-21; March 26-28; April 2-4; or April 9-11, please proceed to our Virtual Shark Preview experience.

Shark Preview Weekends are your chance to get your feet wet and test out the NSU Shark Life. During these enhanced admitted student experiences, you'll interview for Premier Programs and dive right into the NSU culture. We even have special programming for parents and family members so that everyone can get to know your potential new home away from home. In order to attend Shark Preview Weekend, you must be admitted to NSU and apply for at least one Premier Program using the supplemental Premier Programs application.

Here's a sample of what we have planned for you:

  • Spend two nights (at no cost) with a student host in one of our modern residence halls - see Transportation, Housing, and Meals below for more details
  • Meet with our renowned professors for an in-depth look at academic life
  • Attend campus events with our student leaders

Event Details

FALL 2020 ADMITTED STUDENTS:

If you were confirmed to attend a Shark Preview Weekend on March 19-21; March 26-28; April 2-4; or April 9-11, please proceed to our Virtual Shark Preview experience.

INTERESTED FALL 2021 STUDENTS:

Shark Preview Weekend 2021 dates will be announced this fall.

In order to attend Shark Preview Weekend, you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Apply for undergraduate admission to Nova Southeastern University. If you have not already done so, please apply for admission to NSU using the Shark Select Application or the Common Application.
  2. Submit the supplemental Premier Programs application (opening August 1, 2020 for Fall 2021 applicants).
  3. Contingent upon successful admission to NSU and submitting the supplemental Premier Programs application, you will receive an email invitation to tentatively schedule your Shark Preview Weekend online. 
    • This will not serve as your official Shark Preview Weekend date until you receive an official confirmation email. Please do not schedule any travel accommodations until you receive an official confirmation email confirming your Shark Preview Weekend.
  4. Once you receive your official confirmation email with your confirmed Shark Preview Weekend dates, you are good to schedule travel accommodations.
    • You will also receive a travel questionnaire via email - if you are interested in staying on campus during Shark Preview Weekend, you will need to request it through the Travel Questionnaire.
  5. Attend and interview at Shark Preview Weekend. You will receive your interview schedule at check-in.

If you are applying to the Bachelor of Arts in Dance program, you will be required to attend Shark Preview Weekend and audition for course level placement. Contingent upon admission to the university as a dance major, you will receive follow up communication via email to schedule your Shark Preview Weekend and dance placement audition. You are not required to submit a supplemental Premier Programs application if you are attending Shark Preview Weekend for a dance placement audition, but you are encouraged to consider applying for Premier Programs. If you submit a Premier Programs application, your Premier Programs interview(s) will be scheduled during that Shark Preview Weekend. Razor's Edge Shark Talent is a great fit for dance majors.

If you are applying to the Bachelor of Arts in Art and Design program, you will be required to attend Shark Preview Weekend for a portfolio review interview for course level placement. Contingent upon admission to the university as an art and design major, you will receive follow up communication via email to schedule your Shark Preview Weekend and portfolio review interview.

You are not required to submit a supplemental Premier Programs application if you are attending Shark Preview Weekend for a portfolio review interview, but you are encouraged to consider applying for Premier Programs. If you submit a Premier Programs application, your Premier Programs interview(s) will be scheduled during that Shark Preview Weekend. Razor's Edge Shark Talent is a great fit for art and design majors.

Premier Programs

While at Shark Preview Weekend, you will have the opportunity to interview for one or more of the following Premier Programs:

Information Sessions

You will also have the opportunity to attend information sessions about additional academic opportunities at NSU, including:

  • Farquhar Honors College
    • At this information session, you'll hear from an honors faculty member and current honors student how the Farquhar Honors College offers unique opportunities for you to engage in a vibrant student and faculty community that integrates, promotes, and complements all university experiences.
    • During Shark Preview Weekend, you'll also have the opportunity to meet the dean of the Honors College and current honors students at an Honors College reception.
  • Dual Admission Program for Enrolled Students (DAPES)
    • Many of our Dual Admission Programs offer a second opportunity for students who missed the deadline or were not eligible to apply due to test scores and/or GPA. NSU’s Dual Admission Program for Enrolled Students (DAPES) allows you to apply for dual admission after your first year at NSU if you meet the criteria for a specific participating program.   • Entry B.S. Nursing
    • If you are interested in becoming a nursing professional, you can attend this information session to learn more about NSU's Ron and Kathy Assaf College of Nursing Entry B.S. Nursing program. You will also learn what requirements and prerequisite courses are needed for admission and in order to transition smoothly into the program.
Transportation
  • All students and families are responsible for flights and transportation to and from campus during Shark Preview Weekend.
  • Students flying to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport alone will receive free NSU shuttle transportation to and from campus.

Please do not schedule any travel accommodations until you receive an official confirmation email confirming your Shark Preview Weekend. Check-in will be from 2-4 p.m. on Thursday, so we recommend flights landing before 1 p.m. on the Thursday of your confirmed Shark Preview Weekend and flights leaving after 2 p.m. on that Saturday.

Housing and Meals
  • All students have the option to stay Thursday and Friday night with a student host in one of our residence halls, and meals will be provided Thursday night through Saturday morning.
  • It you plan to stay on campus, you must request it by completing a travel questionnaire form you will receive via email after confirming your Shark Preview Weekend date. See note below.
PLEASE NOTE: The priority sign-up date to request overnight stay in the residence halls during Shark Preview Weekend is the Friday prior to your respective visit. While all visiting Sharks are welcome to request housing, priority will be given to non-local Sharks traveling alone. Housing requests received after the priority sign-up date will be accepted but will be automatically waitlisted until an available space can be identified. The Office of Residential Life and Housing with notify you and your student host of the pairing by the Monday prior to your arrival.

  • Students traveling with family may choose to stay off campus, and meals will be provided Thursday night through Saturday morning. Please refer to nova.edu/travel for possible area hotel discounts through Nova Southeastern University’s Travel Office.

Attire Recommendations for Students

  • Thursday activity highlights include a campus tour and peer dinner
    • Casual: t-shirt, shorts, comfortable shoes
  • Friday will be an interview day and Honors College reception
    • Business Casual: button-down shirt, closed toed shoes, tie, appropriate length dress/skirt
  • Friday night you will be a VIP at Club Nova
    • Relaxed/Casual: t-shirt, shorts, flip flops
  • Saturday morning you will be the star at closing ceremony
    • Casual: White long-sleeve Shark Preview shirt (provided at check-in), jeans or appropriate shorts

Parents and family members are welcome to attend Shark Preview Weekend. We will offer special programming and tours. We've included some helpful tips for families below.

Housing

  • Families may refer to nova.edu/travel for possible area hotel discounts through Nova Southeastern University’s Travel Office. Parents and/or family members are not permitted to stay on campus.

Your student will receive a personalized interview and program schedule at check-in. Students applying for multiple Premier Programs will have all interviews coordinated by the Shark Preview team - no interview scheduling is required.
  • For the January 31 Shark Preview Weekend, check-in will be between 8-9:30 a.m. in the Carl DeSantis Building (campus map). Your student will receive a personalized interview and program schedule at check-in. Students applying for multiple Premier Programs will have all interviews coordinated by the Shark Preview team - no interview scheduling is required.
  • Optional parent and family programs will be offered in conjunction with the student programs during Shark Preview Weekend. Parents and family members will not be permitted to join their student during the interview process.

Attire Tips for the Family

  • Please feel free to dress in casual and comfortable attire throughout the weekend.

All guests will park at no cost in the Public Library and Main Student Parking Garage (next to the Carl DeSantis Building) on the 2nd floor. Visit our interactive campus map for directions. Please make sure to print out the parking pass that corresponds to your Shark Preview Weekend and have it displayed on your dashboard.

SHARK PREVIEW WEEKEND PARKING PASS

To get to the Public Library and Main Student Parking Garage from I-95, North or South, or Florida’s Turnpike, North or South:

  • Take I-595 exit, westbound.
  • Proceed on I-595 to University Drive.
  • Turn left and proceed southbound on University Drive to SW 30th Street.
  • Turn left onto SW 30th Street proceed East approximately ½ mile turn right onto Ray Ferrero, Jr. Boulevard.
  • Make a right turn into the NSU campus onto Ray Ferrero, Jr. Boulevard and enter the parking garage using the east side entrance
  • Once you're parked, look for signs or NSU staff to guide you to check-in
