NSU Hurricane Advisory Information - Past Hurricanes

Hurricane Ike

4:00 p.m., Friday, Sept. 5, 2008

We are carefully watching the progress of Hurricane Ike, which is a threat to the Bahamas and Florida.  Although the National Hurricane Center does not project the hurricane to be within our “Forecast Cone” within the next three days, it does have South Florida and most of the State of Florida within that “Cone” during the next five days.

On Sunday, September 7, at 3 PM or before if necessary, we will update information on the Nova Southeastern University's status for the week beginning Monday, September 8. For continual updates on NSU’s status, visit www.nova.edu or call the NSU emergency hotline at 800.256.5065.

NSU classes in the Bahamas (BBCC) are cancelled through the weekend. All other Nova Southeastern University classes and business services are open and operating on a normal basis.

Executive Vice President/COO

Noon, Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008

The 11:00 am advisory from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports that Tropical Storm Hanna is getting “larger… but not stronger” as it edges northward. NHC does advise that as Tropical Storm Hanna moves across the Caribbean toward the islands of Grand Turk and Great Inagua, it may regain hurricane strength tomorrow or Friday.

Because of the uncertainties of the direction and strength of both tropical storms Hanna and Ike, I have been informed that the leadership of the facility that serves as our Student Education Center and where we hold classes in the Bahamas (BBCC), has announced that they will close BBCC this afternoon and through the weekend. Therefore, the president has requested that I inform you that our offices there will be closed beginning this afternoon and that there will be no classes this weekend in the Bahamas.

All other classes in all other locations will continue as scheduled.

George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D.
Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

University Closures

The responsibility for declaring the closing of the university and NSU properties is the authority of the University President. In the event of an emergency, the University President may close a part of, or all of the university's campuses, regional sites, and/or locations. In the event of the announcement of a Hurricane Warning or other severe weather conditions, the University President will decide when, if and which portions of the university will be closed. Information will also be available on the NSU weather hotline: (800) 256-5065. If you need to review the NSU emergency procedures they are available on the NSU Public Safety website

In Case of Emergency System Shutdown

Should the NSU web site (www.nova.edu) become unavailable due to a hurricane, an alternate informational web site will become available at http://blackout.nova.edu. Please bookmark this link in the event it is needed.
