General
What is orientation?
Orientation is a launch program that prepares you for the successful start to your academic career and the exciting new experiences that await you at Nova Southeastern University.
At orientation, you will learn about requirements and services available to you when you join the NSU family. This is a time to meet other new students as well as current students, faculty members, and administrators. Find out what it's really like at NSU and what you need to succeed!
Who should attend orientation?
All new NSU students, both freshman and transfer.
What are the benefits of orientation?
You will learn about academic policies and expectations, receive academic advisement, and finalized your registration. You will meet students, deans, and faculty members. You will learn about the university's many services and resources, and discover what it's like to be an NSU Shark.
Can my parents or guardians attend with me?
Parents and family members are important resources for our new students. We have designed our Parent Orientation as a separate session from the Student Orientation, conveniently held on the first day of each Freshman Orientation session. This event is designed for a new student's parents, legal guardians, spouses, and family members.
Parents and families are not required to attend orientation on the same date as their students. Parent sessions start at 8:00 a.m. and end at 5:30 p.m. Parents and family members are advised to wear comfortable clothing and shoes due to warm temperatures and movement among buildings on campus. This is a full-day program. Please plan to spend the entire day on campus to receive the full benefit of this program.
What should I bring with me?
All students and parents should bring spending money for snacks, drinks, and items from our campus bookstore. Dress comfortably, as all orientation sessions require walking around campus during the day in Florida's subtropical temperatures. Cell phones may not be activated during workshops and sessions. For the overnight program, bring:
- bed pillows
- bed linens (single/extra long) or sleeping bag
- towels and washcloths
- toiletries
- an alarm clock
- an umbrella
- sunglasses
- sunscreen
- wardrobe suitable for outdoor activities, competitive games, and a casual evening indoor social.
What should I wear?
Dress comfortably, as all orientation sessions require walking around campus during the day in Florida's subtropical temperatures. Remember to bring a sweater in case the rooms are cool, and an umbrella in case it rains.

Academic Advising
How do I access academic advising?
During the summer you will be assigned a registration facilitator. Information about your registration facilitator and the registration process is included in the packet mailed to you. You must make an appointment with your academic advisor to register for courses before attending orientation. Appointments may be conducted in person or by telephone. When you attend orientation, your registration will be finalized.
Our goal is to help students be successful. Your registration facilitator/advisor will work with you to determine the appropriate courses for your first term. For math and composition courses, placement is based on a variety of factors that may include standardized test scores, prior college coursework, or AP/IB credit. If you feel that the recommended placement is not consistent with your prior subject knowledge, you may take a challenge exam.
What is a challenge exam, and can I take it before orientation?
Challenge exams are only administered to students who have been referred by an academic advisor to take a challenge exam. These exams are administered in the Office of Academic Services, located on the first floor of the Parker Building.
To see if you are eligible to take a challenge exam, speak to your advisor and then contact Office of Academic Services to set up a time to take the exam.
