100 NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY PREEMINENT CENTER FOR TEACHING, SERVICE, AND RESEARCH IN EARLY CHILDHOOD The Marilyn Segal Early Childhood Studies Center is composed of every endeavor at Nova Southeastern University that impacts the well-being, education, and health of young children. The center’s mission is to enhance the quality of life for children and families. It includes everything from NSU’s University School Preschool to the pediatric services provided by NSU’s Health Clinics. The center also encompasses the university’s innovative courses of study through collaborations with NSU’s colleges. Programs offer on-site professional development training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students across various disciplines. For example, at the College of Dental Medicine, students have opportunities to work at the pediatric dental clinic and learn how to provide treatment to children in a careful, compassionate, and time-sensitive manner. Similarly, NSU’s College of Psychology and Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice offer degree programs that can be focused on early childhood needs and provide students with hands-on opportunities to earn clinical hours working with this population. Research and community service are an important part of everything that NSU does. In collaboration with the aforementioned colleges, experts and researchers from the College of Psychology, the Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences, and the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine are working together to help advance early childhood research and provide more comprehensive clinical services. Each of the colleges, NSU’s University School, and the NSU Alvin Sherman Library also coordinate events and services throughout the year that serve the needs of children. The Marilyn Segal Early Childhood Studies Center showcases the programming, research, and scholarly activities in the field of early childhood and special education and demonstrates the overarching vision that integrates all participating centers. It serves as an example of the university’s commitment to outreach, professional development, research, curriculum, policy and leadership development initiatives. A VISIONARY AND ADVOCATE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN The center preserves the legacy and spirit of Marilyn (Mickey) Segal, Ph.D., who was a visionary and advocate for young children. Over her 30-year tenure, Segal created the first Broward County Head Start, the University School, and the Family Center at NSU where she served as dean, educating children and families, mentoring future professionals and serving the community.
