a year-to-year basis, based on completing the requirements for that year, and are
awarded at the discretion of the faculty. Consideration for determining an extension is
based on a student’s satisfactory progress towards completing all degree requirements. If
program requirements are not met and the requirements for a one-year extension are
not met, students will be dropped from the program. A leave of absence taken during the
course of the program does not extend the 7-year deadline.
DCAR Master’s and Graduate Certificate students must complete degree requirements
within 5 years.
If after 5 years a student has not yet graduated, they will need to retake
any course for which they received transfer of credit taken more than 7 years ago.
Each
term thereafter the student will be responsible for the M.S. courses taken more than 5
years before that point in time. Graduate Certificate students must complete their
program within 2 years. Leaves of absence taken during the course of the program do
not extend the deadline.
Distance learning students are required to attend 5 day long Residential
Institutes (RIs)
per academic year. The Residential Institutes are held on the NSU main campus. In the
case of extenuating circumstances only, a student may request a waiver from RI. Please
note that routine work schedule constraints and inability to travel do not constitute
acceptable reasons for waivers. Due to intensive role-play and group exercises, students
participating in practice courses such as facilitation, mediation and negotiation cannot
gain waivers from these courses and must drop these courses to take them when they
are next offered if they cannot attend RI. If the RI waiver is not granted by the
department, and you are absent from a course during RI, please be aware that you will
receive a full grade deduction in your final course grade. Students seeking an RI waiver
must complete the Residential Institute Waiver form and submit it with all proper
documentation. Any letters or documentation supporting your request must be presented
on a formal letterhead, and documentation from institutions must appear on official
notices/letterhead.
Students are expected to be continuously enrolled until degree requirements are
completed. If a student needs to discontinue studies, s/he must apply for a leave of
absence. Any student who does not register and does not apply for a leave of absence
will be considered withdrawn from the program. Withdrawn students need to petition for
re-entrance into the program to which they were accepted.
Department of Multidisciplinary Studies
DMS students have a maximum of 5 years to complete their master’s degree or graduate
certificate. Students who do not meet this requirement will be considered inactive and
would need to reapply to the program. Leaves of absence taken during the course of the
program do not extend the 5 year deadline.

CSA students taking online courses are required to attend the 5 day Residential Institutes

students must attend only if they are taking facilitation or mediation courses. The
