2023 FACT BOOK 85 NSU-KPCOM’s Department of Couple and Family Therapy is dedicated to teaching and training its students to work with culturally and sexually diverse populations. To that end, the department prioritizes recruiting diverse faculty and staff members, supervisors, and students, so as to create an inclusive environment that empowers students to become authentic and culturally aware practitioners who practice from an affirmative lens and who celebrate differences. The college looks for faculty, supervisors, staff, and students who are self-reflective and open to challenging their own perceptions of social location and who advocate for social justice. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS In response to the need for innovative undergraduate programs that address the changing landscape of health care, NSU’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine (KPCOM) launched its first undergraduate degree in the fall of 2017, a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. Student interest in this alternative premedical path was evident from the onset, prompting the launch of a second undergraduate degree in the fall of 2019—a Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition. KPCOM’s third undergraduate option, a Bachelor of Science in Health and Wellness Coaching, launched in the fall 2020 and addresses the social and behavioral health foundation of medicine from a systems paradigm. The college’s newest program, the Bachelor of Science in Health Informatics, was launched in fall 2021. Students majoring in Health Informatics learn how to improve the safety and efficiency of our health care systems. These four programs account for nearly 400 students at NSU. All Bachelor of Science undergraduate programs in the KPCOM offer four-year degrees, in addition to dualadmission options into the osteopathic medicine college. These dual admission opportunities make NSU’s academic offerings extremely innovative, as no other academic programs in the country offer dual-admission options with undergraduate course offerings in public health, human nutrition, health and wellness coaching, or health informatics. GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATES NSU-KPCOM’s Certificate in Health Professions Preparation (CHPP) is a full-time, graduate-level certificate program (commonly referred to as a postbac.) designed to enhance the academic preparation of qualified pre-health students with a goal of direct matriculation into NSU-KPCOM’s Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Program. The program is delivered by KPCOM faculty members and utilizes a flipped classroom curriculum in which student’s progress through the two-semester program as one cohort. While enrolled, students are provided training in the basic sciences, foundational for success in the preclinical years of the medical school curriculum. Student’s who successfully complete the program with a 500 cumulative MCAT score and a 3.60 GPA are guaranteed admission into the college’s D.O. program. Student’s who successfully complete the program with a 500 cumulative MCAT and a GPA of 3.40–3.59 will be guaranteed an admissions interview. NSU-KPCOM’s Graduate Certificate in Public Health is designed to provide health care workers (government/private nonprofit), college graduates, nurses, physicians, teachers, and anyone else interested with the opportunity to study the fundamental principles underlying public health education and practice without pursuing an entire graduate degree program. Some professionals augment their credentials and job prospects through a certificate in public health. The Graduate Certificate in Health Education is designed to provide those individuals with the opportunity to study the fundamental principles, concepts, and skills applied to health education and health promotion at the graduate level. Both certificates consist of 15 credits of graduate-level public health courses presented using online technology (Canvas). NSU-KPCOM’s Graduate Certificate in Public Health Informatics is designed to enable students to acquire the core knowledge that applies to public health informatics fundamentals, principles, and practice.
