78 NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY Students are advised by faculty members in each specific sequence who are experts in pharmacology, pharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, and/or pharmacy administration. Upon completion of the Ph.D. program, students will demonstrate the knowledge base expected at the Ph.D. level in their specialty, design and conduct independent research that adds to the understanding of their specialty, prepare and defend rational and structured proposals seeking support for research efforts, and prepare and present lucid manuscripts on their own research, as well as the research of others. Faculty members and preceptors are recognized as experts in their field and are dedicated to providing quality professional and graduate education that focuses on academic excellence. Students have numerous opportunities to develop leadership skills, participate in community health-related activities, and engage in research and scholarship. The NSU Pharmacy and Pharmacy Clinics, students, and faculty members participate in interprofessional outreach activities that provide a range of disease management services, educational screening services, and immunization clinics; pharmacy-based research services; and education to accountable care organizations, patient-centered medical homes, and managed services organizations, as well as continuing education programs for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Students are active in more than 20 graduate and professional student organizations and actively engage in advocacy for the profession. For 10+ years, the College of Pharmacy has provided travel study opportunities for students to study global health care systems in Europe, Asia, and South America. Additional opportunities for service and travel to advance the health and well-being of our global community are provided in the college’s global medical outreach programs to Central America. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine was established in 2017 as the eighth medical school in the populous state of Florida granting the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. The college received Preliminary Accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) in October 2017 and matriculated its charter class of 53 students in July 2018. In January of 2018, the college was renamed the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allo- pathic Medicine in recognition of a substantial gift from the Patel Family Foundation to support student scholarships. NSU’s M.D. College is matriculating its fourth class of students and is considered for Full Accreditation by LCME. In lockstep with NSU’s vision, the college is committed to becoming a preeminent medical school through a strong focus on academic medicine’s tripartite mission of excellence in medical education, research, and patient-centered care. The college enjoys strong institutional and community support and has successfully partnered with Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) East Florida and its hospital network to provide excellent student training experiences in clinically relevant settings. HCA will soon open a 200-bed teaching and research hospital on NSU’s Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus. It will be within walking distance of the university’s educational and research facilities, including NSU’s 215,000-square- foot Center for Collaborative Research, which houses the majority of the NSU M.D. College’s research faculty. M.D. PROGRAM The college’s M.D. program is taught in conjunction with other NSU and HPD colleges, using renovated space to accommodate M.D. students and the college’s active-learning curriculum. Developed by a team of more than 100 expert medical educators, physicians, and researchers, the college’s innovative curriculum is designed to train and develop master adaptive learners and physician leaders who will transform health care.
