COM Outlook - Summer 2015

2 Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine 3 Chancellor’s COMmuniqué EACH YEAR, as we progress into the summer season, I always feel an immense sense of pride and wonderment as I watch members of my family—namely our graduating students—walk across the stage to receive their hard-earned diplomas during the various Health Professions Division (HPD) commencement ceremonies. At the same time, however, I also have the privilege of welcoming a large number of bright, new faces to our numerous HPD programs. When I greet our incoming classes each year, I traditionally say, “You are no longer in competition with one another. You’ve successfully competed to get into these seats that many thousands of individuals, depending on the program, also tried to attain.” As new students, it’s important for them to understand that they now have a responsibility to obtain, and then apply, the knowledge they have received at NSU. This will ensure they become the best health care providers they can be and provide an opportunity for their patients to have a more prosperous and privileged life experience in regard to staying healthy. I truly believe it’s an exciting time for health care in general. It’s also reassuring for our students to know that—based on various job reports— 7 of the top 10 job opportunities in the United States over the next several decades are going to be in health care. As we begin the new academic year, it’s my impression that the students who just began their HPD educational experience add a degree of excitement and an atmosphere of zeal that excites not only those of us who represent the NSU administration, but also our faculty members. It ignites the feeling that we are all doing something truly worthwhile for our students. FREDERICK LIPPMAN , R.Ph., Ed.D. Graduation 2015 Awards and Highlights SENIOR WEEK provided an abundance of opportunities for the class of 2015 to get reacquainted while participating in a memorable sail on the Lady Windridge yacht and at- tending an awards banquet at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/ Broward County Convention Center. The week culminated on May 15 when 237 D.O., 58 Master of Public Health, 23 Master of Biomedical Informatics, and 6 Master of Disaster and Emergency Preparedness degrees were conferred during the NSU College of Osteopathic Medicine and College of Dental Medicine commencement ceremony at the Arena at the Don Taft University Center on the NSU main campus. In addition, one graduate received his dual D.O./D.M.D. degree. During the ceremony, graduates from both colleges were acknowledged for their accomplishments in front of an enthusiastic audience filled with family, friends, and faculty members. H. Murray Todd, M.D., FAAN, served as the keynote speaker and received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree as part of the ceremony. …Based on various job reports—7 of the top 10 job opportunities in the United States over the next several decades are going to be in health care.” “
