47 P rocessional B anners (G onfalons ) The gonfalon, a banner that hangs from a crosspiece or frame, originated in the medieval republics of Italy as an ensign of state or office. Gonfalons have been adopted in many universities around the world as college or institutional insignias, and many use them to identify and lead colleges and schools within the university in academic procession. The gonfalons represent the university and the various academic colleges of Nova Southeastern University. u u Sigma Tau Delta, recognizing students in English, literature, and writing by scarlet and black cords u u Sigma Theta Tau, recognizing students in nursing by purple and white cords and stole u u Tau Sigma, recognizing academic excellence of transfer students by burgundy and gold cords u u Commencement Honors, recognizing students holding a cumulative grade average of 3.8 or higher by a gold cord u u General Citation in Honors, recognizing students in all majors who have fulfilled course and grade requirements in the Farquhar Honors College by a silver medallion with a blue ribbon u u Research Citation in Honors, recognizing students in all majors who have fulfilled thesis, course, and grade requirements in the Farquhar Honors College by a gold medallion with blue ribbon
