newsletter. Our goal
is to keep everyone abreast of what’s
going on in our world that affects the
whole NSU community. In each issue,
we will try and focus on a few topics
of current interest rather than trying
to cover everything that is happening
in IT. In this issue, we will highlight
the unification of the university’s IT
departments, the network upgrade
in HPD, the start of work on the NSU
unified calendar, the Barnes & Noble
Nook Study, the WebCT migration to
Blackboard and enhancements to the
SharkLearn app.
We will continue to work hard
to provide you with the technologies
you need to achieve your goals-, and
help enrich your NSU experience. The
newsletter will be issued four times a
year; our next issue will be in October
2012. We hope you find the newslet-
ter useful and informative, but we also
welcome your feedback and sugges-
tions to make it better.
As always, let’s go out there and
invent and be innovative in our tech-
nology output.

Officer

faculty and staff members and students this coming
fall of 2012.
UNIFICATION JOURNEY
Nova Southeastern University´s journey to 2020 began when NSU President and Chief Executive Officer
George L . Hanbury II, Ph.D., started work on a vision for an even brighter future for our university. The result
was our Vision 2020 Statement: By 2020, through excellence and innovations in teaching, research, ser-
vice, and learning, Nova Southeastern University will be recognized by accrediting agencies, the academic
community, and the general public, as a premier, private ,not-for-profit university of quality and distinction
that engages all students and produces alumni who serve with integrity in their lives, fields of study, and
resulting careers.
H
anbury foresaw that achieving this audacious goal
would require that we take a holistic approach and
review every aspect of our university operations.
He engaged Blackwell Consulting Services, a man-
agement and information technology consultancy, to under-
take a thorough review of information technology services
at the university. The final report, now commonly known as
the Blackwell report, was issued on May 13, 2010. Hanbury
shared the report and reviewed the recommendations with
the members of the President’s Council and other
stakeholders at the university.
At the same time, the university was searching for a new
chief information officer (CIO). Tom West became the new
CIO in March 2011, with a clear mandate from Hanbury to
implement the recommendations of the Blackwell report.
With Tom West at the helm, the IT department began its
journey forward toward a unified, innovative, and student-
focused service-oriented organization. The department
started its metamorphosis by encompassing a new name to
emphasize the university’s vision and core values, the Office
of Innovation and Information Technology (OI²T).
One key recommendation of the Blackwell report was to
build an IT governance capability, including a Project Man-
agement Office-, (PMO)-, and an IT Steering Committee. All
of these improve the transparency of IT governance at NSU,
align service delivery and IT efforts with the strategic plan,
and ensure that plans are delivered, and produced within
budget and by commitment dates. By mid 2011, a new
PMO was established and staffed.
All major projects are now managed via the PMO process
and the CIO reviews the portfolio on a regular basis to en-
sure that work is proceeding as planned or early corrective
actions are taken.
