Completing a Journey from Athlete to Sports Agent

At Miami Springs Senior High School, Raul Valero earned All-Dade Honors in football. He was good enough to get a full-ride scholarship to Florida Atlantic University, where he played under Coach Howard Schnellenberger.

In baseball, he was good enough to earn tryouts with the New York Mets and Washington Nationals. But ultimately, a sports agent friend convinced him that his future would be “more secure” if he went to law school, and then become a sports agent.

Now entering his third year of law school, his friend’s words may be ringing true. Valero finds himself in the top of his class academically and holding the prestigious title of editor in chief of the Law Review.

He has held memberships in the Sports and Entertainment Law Society and the Tort Law Society, and has participated in the International Moot Court competition. This past summer, Valero interned for a major sports agent organization in Chicago, Illinois. As editor in chief of the Law Review, Valero receives a stipend of $10,000 for doing an important service he likens to a “20-hour-per-week job.” After his first year of law school, he received a renewable $7,500 Merit Scholarship for his excellent first year academic performance. “The scholarship and stipend have helped me out tremendously,” he states. “This support has made my career goals possible.”
