NSU University School Student/Parent Handbook 2016-2017

Page 26 A student who is not in class at the designated start time or when the bell rings is tardy. Before being admitted to first period, the student must report to the attendance office to obtain a pass to class if they are late for school. Students arriving 15 minutes or more late to class will be considered absent. However, students must report to their class upon arrival to school after signing in, otherwise they will be truant. Penalties for Tardiness Tardiness is not stipulated as excused or unexcused. Since prompt arrival to school is the responsibility of the student and parent, late arriving students—transported by parents—are considered tardy. Students are expected to be in class on time. In addition to the absence/tardy policy defined earlier, if a student incurs excessive tardies to any class, the student may be referred to the associate director of student life for further discipline. PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION BETWEEN COUPLES School property and school-sponsored events are not appropriate places for public displays of affection between couples. NSU University School believes that while on campus, students' attention needs to be focused on school work, and that we must be considerate of others and promote a comfortable environment for everyone. Student-with-student intimate behaviors and physical contact, which include, but are not limited to kissing, caressing, embracing, hugging, and any prolonged physical touching are not permitted. Students who engage in public displays of affection may be subject to disciplinary measures, since this may offend others and distracts from the learning environment. ACADEMIC OBLIGATIONS FOR MISSED CLASSES Test Make-up Students will be expected to make up missed quizzes and tests upon returning to school. It is the responsibility of the student to make up his or her missed assessments in a timely fashion. The school will provide a monitored test make-up room. Any tests that are made up outside of the test make-up room can be done at the convenience of the teacher. Students who miss the original assessment will be offered an alternative version of the assessment. The alternative version may be offered in a different format. In the event a student has had a lengthy absence and has missed numerous quizzes and tests, it is recommended that the student report to his or her guidance counselor, who will work with teachers to develop a test make-up plan. If tests or quizzes have been announced or posted before a student’s absence and the student is present on the test/quiz day, it is expected that the student will take the assessment that day in test make-up or by arrangement with the teacher. ACCIDENTS/INJURIES (students) Notify your teacher(s), an administrator or the nurse immediately. FIRE DRILLS AND EMERGENCY EVACUATION The signal to evacuate is the loud continuous sounding of the fire alarm system. Students are to evacuate quietly and file quickly to the designated area. Students may return when the all clear signal is given. Should a fire drill occur during class change or lunch break, students should go to the nearest exit and remain 50 feet from the building until the all clear signal is given. In the event of evacuation for other emergencies, the same procedure as for fire drills will be used. ASSEMBLIES Assemblies are scheduled periodically during the school year. All students are expected to attend assemblies and demonstrate exemplary behavior. FIELD TRIPS 1. Co-curricular: Students who are involved in co-curricular field trips will be marked as a non-chargeable absence. Students are responsible for all work missed during a school-related absence.
