Review Process for sanctions that result in expulsion Students subject to disciplinary sanctions that may result in expulsion are entitled to the right to appeal the expulsion decision: 1. The student and parents will be informed orally or in writing of the charged infraction. 2. An executive committee will be convened. The executive committee is composed of one or more associate directors, one or more guidance counselors, and three teachers. The committee is convened within three school days to impartially consider all aspects of the issues, and to make a recommendation to the divisional director as the appropriate consequences. The student is permitted to submit a written statement to the committee for their review. No parental or legal counsel is permitted. The executive committee makes a formal recommendation to the divisional director. 3. The divisional director reserves the right to accept or modify the recommendation of the executive committee and will render a decision. The divisional director’s decision shall be issued orally within three school days of the executive committee’s meeting and presented to the student and head of school. 4. If the decision of the individual director is expulsion, it may be appealed to the head of school (or head of school’s designee). This written appeal shall specify reasons and provide supporting information and facts. This written communication (letter or email) must be written by the student, or parents, but may not be from legal counsel or representatives. The letter must be delivered to the head of school or his assistant within three calendar days of receipt of the divisional director’s decision. The head of school’s (or head of school’s designee’s) decision is final. Notes Regarding Recommendations for Suspension and Expulsion: Recommendations for expulsion do not automatically result in expulsion. School administrators have the authority and flexibility to consider other disciplinary action based on the offense, age of student, previous disciplinary record, extenuating circumstances, and totality of the incident. However, chronic misbehavior that results in progressive sanctions at one level may result in expulsion. If a student withdraws during disciplinary proceedings, they will not be considered for re-admission. Disciplinary proceedings will continue and by withdrawing the student waives the right to appeal. ACADEMIC PROBATION At the end of each official grading period, students whose academic average falls to a failing (F) grade in any course will be placed on academic probation for the subsequent grading period. Students on academic probation may lose their privilege to participate in extracurricular or co-curricular activities including but not limited to athletics, forensics, speech and debate, school productions, and other programs of the school until the probationary status is removed. This status is reviewed at the end of each official grading period by the administration. INSULTING INSTRUCTIONAL PERSONNEL; DISTURBING SCHOOL FUNCTIONS Any person who upbraids, abuses, or insults any member of the school staff, including coaches, on or off school property, at any school-sponsored event or activity; or, any person not otherwise subject to the rules and regulations of the school; who creates a disturbance on the property or grounds of the school; who commits any act that interrupts the orderly conduct of school or any activity thereof will be restricted and/or prohibited from attending any future school events, functions, or common school practices.
