Page 10 period to a full day, and may occur before school, after school or during lunch, or during school holiday breaks. 4. Suspension: Suspension means a student cannot attend school, or be on the school grounds, cannot attend any program at the school in the daytime or at night, and cannot ride a school bus. Suspension is the exclusion of a student from school and school activities for a period of time. The school uses the word suspension in this policy to mean either suspension from school or in-school suspension as determined by the principal. Students who are suspended must make up missed work. 5. Provisional Suspension: In some situations, an external suspension without penalty may be given. This type of suspension applies in cases in which a student is removed from the school pending an evaluation or the outcome of an investigation. 6. Suspension with Nonrenewal of Contract : Students may be separated from the school until the end of a specific term after serving an external suspension. The student will be allowed to finish the year in good academic standing but will not be permitted to re-enroll at NSU University School. 7. Restitution: Students may be required to pay compensation for damage to and/or loss of property or injury. 8. Expulsion: Expulsion is the permanent removal of a student from school. Levels of Offenses The following is a general listing of offenses and the required or recommended progressive disciplinary actions which should be taken as a result of such offenses being committed. The following list is only illustrative. The NSU University School reserves the right to categorize an offense, and the disciplinary action as it deems appropriate based on the severity, frequency and/or the totality of the circumstances. Level I: A Level I offense is defined as any activity in which a student engages that tends to impede orderly classroom procedures or instructional activities, orderly operation of the school or where the frequency or seriousness of the act or acts disturb the classroom or school. Level I offenses may include, but are not limited to, the following: • Articles disruptive to class, possession or use of unapproved electronic and devices or inappropriate use of devices (e.g., radios, iPods, video games) • Unauthorized cell phone use • Taping/taking unauthorized pictures on campus • Video/photo uploading to personal web-based locations without permission • Classroom tardiness • Dress code (violation of dress code) • Gum chewing • Consumption or distribution of homemade baked goods during school hours • Cheating on examinations or classroom assignments • Lying • Forgery (see cheating section) or plagiarism • Acting in a manner so as to interfere with the instructional process • Being in unsupervised/unauthorized area or in authorized area at inappropriate time • Abusive or profane language between or among students • Smoking/chewing tobacco products or vapor devices/e-cigarettes • Violation of school bus regulations
