76 4. document and report any unusual incident, including (but not limited to) disclosures of abuse or maltreatment, behavior problems and how they were handled, injuries or any interactions that might be misinterpreted POLICY GOVERNING INTERACTIONS BETWEEN EMPLOYEES AND CHILDREN OUTSIDE OF REGULARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAM ACTIVITIES NSU University School takes pride in its extra-curricular programs. These include a wide array of interscholastic athletics, award-wining fine and performing arts and academic competitions. These activities require that adults (coaches, club sponsors and faculty) be responsible for children outside and apart from the regular school program. Approved outside contact include (but are not limited to) group events in athletics, fine and performing arts, academics, clubs, grade level activities, and community service projects. NOTE: students should be in groups of 2 or more. Employees are permitted to attend functions at students’ homes as long as parents/guardians are there. Unacceptable and inappropriate types of contact, possibly resulting in disciplinary action include taking one child out to dinner, to a movie, visiting one child at home without a parent or guardian present, one child spending the night with employees. In all cases where NSU University School employees are in the presence of children and students off-campus or outside of regular school programs, submit in writing, any plans for outside, off-campus contact with children and students – include date, time, activity and names. POLICY REGARDING CONTACT AND DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION AMONG AND BETWEEN EMPLOYEES AND CHILDREN/STUDENTS Inherent in the mission of NSU University School is a statement focusing upon humanistic treatment in a non-threatening environment. This statement suggests a warm and comfortable learning environment in which students and faculty alike can flourish and be productive. Oft times, employees wish to show encouragement, support and appreciation to children for their work ethic, accomplishments and achievements. The following are acceptable means for providing praise and recognition: 1. specific verbal reward 2. side hugs, shoulder-to-shoulder hugs, shoulder and back pats 3. handshakes, high-fives The following are prohibited: 1. full frontal hugs, kisses, touching bottoms, chests or genital areas 2. showing affection in isolated areas 3. touching knees, legs
