59 NSU University School expects students to conduct themselves in an orderly, courteous, dignified and respectful manner. This requirement refers to their actions toward other students and teachers, their language, their dress and their manners. The school believes self-discipline is an interpersonal goal of independent school education. Students have a responsibility to know and respect and adhere to the policies, rules and regulations of the school. Violations of such policies, rules and regulations will result in disciplinary actions. The school directs students to the Honor Code set forth in this policy and the parent/student handbook. School authorities will employ probation and suspension and recommend expulsion, if necessary, to enforce this policy. It is the philosophy of the School to handle all student disciplinary matters at the lowest supervisory level possible and in the most reasonable manner possible. Disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with appropriate procedural rights being afforded to students and their parents/guardians as provided by school policies. Sanctions If the student is found to be in violation of Honor Code and/or NSU University School policies or procedures, one or more of the following sanctions may be imposed. The following list is only illustrative. The NSU University School reserves the right to take additional disciplinary action as it deems appropriate. 1. Verbal Reprimand/Conference: A verbal reprimand is provided via a meeting between the student and/or his parents and school personnel. The reprimand would seek to stop future behavior by means of a conversation between the student/parent and school personnel. The reprimand would explain the infraction and include a statement as to what behavior was expected, serving as notice or warning that the behavior may not be repeated. 2. Withdrawal of Privileges: A privilege is defined as a student’s opportunity to participate in any function of the school beyond attending class and riding in the school bus. 3. Detention / Internal Suspension: Detention is structured time spent away from others in the school community, usually in a designated location. Time spent in detention or internal suspension may be as short as one class period to a full day, and may occur before school, after school or during lunch, or during school holiday breaks. 4. Suspension: Suspension means a student cannot attend school, or be on the school grounds, cannot attend any program at the school in the daytime or at night, and cannot ride a school bus.
