56 6. Don’t be selective either in the rules you will enforce of the students upon whom you will enforce them. This is particularly important with regard to tardiness and dress code. 7. Avoid the use of the threat or negative outcome. Particularly, avoid using academic threats to coerce behavior. Consequences for negative behavior should be realistic. Teachers may use detention or other means. Lowering a grade for misbehavior is unacceptable. Where negative behavior is continuous, the teacher should notify parents. If behavior persists, a referral should be made to the Dean of Students. 8. Finally, students should be expected to act in a responsible and respectful manner. 9. All staff members are expected to become familiar with the section of the Student Handbook relating to school discipline policies. Student Honor Code All students, on their honor, will treat others with respect and will not lie, cheat, or steal. 1. Respect is treating others with civility and consideration. 2. Cheating is giving, receiving, or attempting to give or receive unauthorized help. It also includes plagiarism. Plagiarism is a form of cheating that is the representation of another’s work as one’s own. 3. Stealing is the taking of anything without the consent of the owner. 4. Lying is defined as any attempt to deceive, falsify, or misrepresent the truth in any manner. Honor Pledge As a NSU University School student, I understand the honor code and will abide by it. I will encourage others to promote honesty, courtesy, and responsibility throughout NSU University School. I understand that violation of the honor code will result in disciplinary action. Student Discipline: Conduct and Behavior NSU University School expects students to conduct themselves in an orderly, courteous, dignified and respectful manner. This requirement refers to their actions toward other students and teachers, their language, their dress and their manners. The school believes self-discipline is an interpersonal goal of independent school education.
