26 1. Chaperones assume a 24-hour a day responsibility from the time they leave until the student returns home. 2. At no time may a chaperone leave the group for personal reasons. 3. Drinking alcoholic beverages or use of any illegal substance anytime during the trip is prohibited. 4. Chaperones should not retire until all students are in their rooms and all rooms are quiet. 5. Adequate supervision is provided throughout the trip to include a security plan (location of chaperones, room arrangements, hotel security). 6. Ratios of students should be determined by the nature of the trips, but as a general guide, the school requires the following minimum adult to student ratios: 1 adult for every 10 students. 7. A student will be permitted to stay in the same motel/hotel room with a chaperone only if the chaperone is the student’s parent or legal guardian. Students whose parents or legal guardians are not serving as chaperones will share rooms with same-sex students only. 8. All arrangements for accommodations while on an educational field trip or school sponsored student travel must be reviewed and approved by the director or director’s designee before travel begins. 9. Overnight trips require the participation of a least one current CPR certified adult. 10. For the protection of all field trip participants, student luggage may be subject to a random search. 11. A telephone chain shall be prepared and duplicated so that one long distance call could be made to report an emergency change of plans. One copy of this list shall be kept with the permission slips in the school office. Each trip chaperone and each participant's parent/guardian shall also receive a copy. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT SPONSORS REMAIN WITH THE GROUP DURING TRAVEL. The mode of transportation for educational field trips and other student travel to school related activities will be by commercial carrier, school buses, or approved private vehicles. Specific guidelines related to the use of school buses and private vehicles are included below. FACULTY/STAFF CHAPERONE RESPONSIBILITIES Faculty and staff who chaperone a student activity on campus either after school or in the evening are responsible for students who attend the activity. Rules of conduct for students are the same for these activities as for activities within the school day. Students are to enter the activity and when they leave, are not to return. No students are to loiter in the parking area or to engage in activities that considered inappropriate according to NSU University School rules of conduct. Faculty and staff are expected to supervise from the beginning of the activity and remain until the last student has left. Teachers who assume the responsibilities for chaperoning a group of students on an out- of-town trip should recognize that they are assuming a twenty-four-hour-a-day responsibility from the time they leave until the time they return.
