NSU University School Faculty, Staff and Employee Handbook
24 There are two types of Lightning Warnings, one issuing a warning within a 12-mile radius and one issuing a warning within a 6-mile radius of the Main NSU Campus. When the 12-mile radius warning is issued, no immediate action is required; Directors should monitor incoming messages and be ready to take action should the warning change. When the 6-mile radius warning is issued, ALL Students and Staff should remain indoors, no playground or recess, no changing buildings and no dismissal. Director communicates with Associate head for External Relations’ office for school-wide directions. If the warning is issued within the dismissal time, each building director should call into the Head of School’s Office to get instructions. Public Safety will be used to help us direct parents and students. If appropriate, an AlertNow message will be sent out to parents letting them know that we are under a severe weather alert and students will be kept inside until the warning is cleared. Parents will be told that they can come inside the building and pick up their children if they choose to do that. Upper School students who drive will not be allowed to leave until the warning is cleared. In the event that the weather advisory or warning occurs after hours, the administrator who is present at the time will make the decision to stop the event/practice/activity and make arrangements for the safety of the students and staff. SUPERVISI0N: On and Off-site Supervision Procedures: 1. Teachers involved in any activities outside of the regularly scheduled program must avoid meeting alone with individual children. If this does occur, the door should remain open at all times and the teacher and students must be in clear site of the open doorway or area. 2. In instances where a teacher must leave his/her assigned students, the teacher must make provisions for supervision by designated school personnel prior to leaving the room. 3. During off-site activities, faculty and staff chaperoning field trips are responsible for children. 4. While being transported to the off-site activity, children must be accompanied on the bus by at least two adults. 5. Rules for conduct for children are the same as for any activity within the school. 6. Ratios of students should be determined by the nature of the trips, but as a general guide, the school requires the following minimum adult to student ratios: 1 adult for every 10 students. Students must be accompanied by an adult when using the bathroom facilities at the off-site event. 7. When transporting children in vehicles, staff must use the “rule of three.” At least two adults are required to transport a single child. 8. At least two children must be present if transported by a single adult. Children must never be transported without written permission from a parent and staff should not make any unauthorized stops.
