19 TAKING STUDENT ATTENDANCE Teachers are required to take and submit student attendance records within 5 minutes of the start of any class or when any change is made to student assignment or schedule. Because of state compulsory school attendance laws, all schools must account for the presence/absence of students both at the start/end and during school hours. Attendance records, which are official and legal documents, are subpoenaed in courts of law concerning such suits as child custody and parent negligence. These records are also applied in cases of truancy and absence which can be prosecuted at the state level and can include referral of parents, guardians, or custodians to State Court and referral of juveniles to Juvenile Court for prosecution. Follow the specific procedures outlined by each division for reporting. BUILDING/CLASSROOM APPEARANCE Rooms and halls should be attractive and orderly, reflecting the positive attitude of the school. Bulletin boards and displays of student work should be current, neat, and attractive. Displays should be age/grade/content appropriate. ***NOTE:***Wall displays may occupy no more than 25% of the classroom/hallway wall space. All displays must be made /constructed with fire- proof materials. All information posted in classrooms and hallways must be posted on bulletin boards only – DO NOT use staples or push-pins in wall/dry board surfaces. Tape can only be used on glass – DO NOT use any type of tape on painted or wood surfaces. Windows on classroom doors must provide an unobstructed view into the classroom. Employees must report needed repairs or observed damage to any part of the facility to their supervisor. STUDENT – OWNED CELL PHONES Faculty / Administration may take/ hold/ confiscate students’ cell phones when a student fails to use his/her phone in accordance with school policy. If a phone is confiscated, it is the responsibility of the teacher to ensure the security of the device. If the device were to be stolen, or lost, replacement would be at the expense of the employee. EMPLOYEES ARE NOT PERMITTED to view or access information contained in the students’ phone. TEACHERS TRANSFERRING FROM ONE DIVISION TO ANOTHER WITHIN NSU UNIVERSITY SCHOOL The policy regarding employee transfers within the NSU University School is identified below: 1.
