260 Nova Southeastern University • Undergraduate Student Catalog • 2014–2015 FARQUHAR COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences The Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences offers the Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioral Neuroscience, Criminal Justice, Human Development and Family Studies, Paralegal Studies, Psychology, Public Administration, and Sociology. The division also administers the Psychological Studies concentration for the college’s interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Professional Studies. Majors in Social and Behavioral Sciences Behavioral Neuroscience Major The behavioral neuroscience major focuses on the biological basis of behavior by exploring the role of the nervous system in normal and abnormal behavior, thought, and emotion. It uses a multidisciplinary approach to study the organization and function of the nervous system, from the molecular to the behavioral level, in such areas as development, sensation and perception, cognition, learning and memory, movement, sleep, stress, aging, and neurological and psychological disorders. The major provides students with a program of study that prepares them to pursue entry-level positions in such areas as biomedical research and the pharmaceutical industry or graduate education in such disciplines as neuroscience, psychology, pharmacology, medicine, and neurobiology. Behavioral Neuroscience Major Learning Outcomes A successful behavioral neuroscience graduate is expected to: 1. Demonstrate a foundation of knowledge in behavioral neuroscience; 2. Demonstrate the ability to independently develop a research proposal and evaluate the application and limitations of various methodologies; 3. Demonstrate the ability to communicate research findings from the field of behavioral neuroscience. Behavioral Neuroscience Major Curriculum General Education Requirements (30 credits) Students are required to complete 30 credit hours as part of theGeneral Education Program.
