At the beginning of March, Starbucks launched their newest line of drinks, including the descriptively named “Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso,” which contains oat milk and brown sugar syrup poured over the signature Starbucks Blonde Espresso and ice. The drink is also shaken as opposed to being blended or mixed with a spoon. Many Starbucks fans were excited about this drink, as it is the brand’s first oat-milk-based option. However, if you would like to try and make this drink at home, below is a recipe you can follow without having to break the bank on fancy coffee supplies or ingredients. This recipe was adapted from Liv B’s recipe. . Ingredients: Brown Sugar Syrup: • 4 tbsp brown sugar • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon • 3 tbsp water • 1 tsp vanilla extract Latte: • 2 shots espresso • Mason jar or sealable cup to shake the drink • Glass with ice • Oat milk (to taste) Instructions: 1. Combine syrup ingredients in a small pan or pot. Set heat to medium-high and whisk to combine ingredients. 2. Once the mixture begins to simmer, lower to medium-low heat and let simmer for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Evan Kelley Contributing Writer 3. Remove from heat after the mixture thickens into a syrup and set aside. 4. Brew espresso or coffee. Add to the shaking jar with 4 tbsp of the prepared syrup and ice and shake for 1-2 minutes. Make sure the lid is on tightly and that the jar is safe to use with hot liquids. 5. After shaking, pour into glass over ice. 6. Add oat milk to taste, stir, and enjoy. This drink is the perfect DIY drink for someone who loves lattes, but can’t handle dairy or Starbucks prices. You can always swap oat milk for another type of milk or buy pre-made syrups in different flavors to experiment a bit. From start to finish, this recipe only takes about 10-15 minutes to complete, making it a good alternative to sitting in long coffee shop drive-through lines. Arts & Entertainment Feeling nostalgic?
