Student Life Achievement Awards | 2021

2 Alpha Phi Omega—Division of Student Affairs Alpha Phi Omega is a coed national service fraternity whose members devote themselves to leadership, friendship, and service in all that they do. They participate in community service of all kinds, on and off campus, and provide members with the opportunity to develop leadership skills and service opportunities through service to the nation, the community, the campus, and the fraternity members. This past year, Alpha Phi Omega has provided more service opportunities, both virtually and in person, than any other organization, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the organization has been recognized with the New Member Program of Excellence Award from our National Office and has had many members recognized at the LEAD21 Leadership Recognition Ceremony. Black Student Union—Division of Student Affairs The Black Student Union (BSU) promotes interaction between and among different ethnic groups at Nova Southeastern University by providing cultural, service, and social activities available to all students at the university. Throughout the year, the group has worked extremely hard to remain active through the pandemic. Members participated in the first virtual Sharkapalooza, volunteered at feeding South Florida, and volunteered at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas during the third-year anniversary of the shooting that prematurely took some precious souls off the earth. Despite the restrictions of the pandemic, BSU created and enacted an action plan that allowed members to host their annual “Black Excellence Showcase,” which was a huge success. They booked a stage, hired a food truck, and had a disc jockey, along with a photographer and videographer to document the event. NSU Collegiate DECA—Division of Student Affairs The NSU Collegiate DECA chapter was started three years ago, and, in such a short time, it has seen much growth. DECA focuses on creating leaders for the future and is made of all kinds of students. From science to humanities, DECA is a place for all students to grow their leadership and business skills. The group’s students have earned 70 awards, ranging from the state to the international level. DECA plans to continue creating champions through its interactive career development workshops and continue bringing NSU to the spotlight through competitive events. NSU Sociodrama Club: Stage for Change—Division of Student Affairs The NSU Sociodrama Club: Stage for Change educates and raises awareness on various critical social topics. This innovative methodology utilizes dramatic techniques, promoting audience interaction with the characters in the scene, played by student actors from the club. Various topics and audiences have included Active Shooter Training for the Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice, Autism Awareness for the College of Dental Medicine, Dating Relationship Violence for Early Immersion Learners, and Child Protection for social workers and foster care parents. The sociodrama club illustrates NSU’s Core Value of Academic Excellence by utilizing its unique and innovative modality of learning, bridging the gap between theory and practice. The club’s sociodrama programs have all been extremely well received, garnering positive feedback and accolades across the university community. 2021 NOMINEES FOR NSU Undergraduate Organization of the Year
