I am pleased to report our research capacity is growing. We have new research, significant collaborations, and innovative principal investigators, not to mention a new Center for Collaborative Research, now under construction and scheduled for completion in 2016. This LEED silver certification facility will offer a cutting-edge, collaborative environment that will house one of Florida’s largest wet labs, a technology incubator offering partnerships with innovative companies, and some of the world’s most-accomplished researchers. Our future initiatives include a hospital on the NSU campus. Establishment of a hospital-based clinical research environment is the next logical step in the “bench to bedside” continuum, and will be a key element in developing state-of-the-art, personalized medicine for the public good. NSU’s collaborative and multidisciplinary research emphasis will bring exciting, new opportunities to focus on translational medicine, making new therapeutic discoveries, improving patient care and outcomes, treating difficult mental health disorders, and combating the diseases that plague our community and our world. By integrating research and academics, we enhance patient care, advance technology, and improve education. The value in expanding research is not just the creation of new knowledge, but also the enrichment of students’ learning. Teaching and research are complementary, synergistic strengths at NSU that benefit all stakeholders. In the coming fiscal year, we will continue to make strategic investments in institutional excellence, and leverage our major and growing institutional strengths. Progress in growing our research capacity is critical as we undertake new initiatives that will change the face of NSU. Our faculty and staff members and students continue to provide inspiration and innovation, showing a campus-wide commitment to excellence in research and scholarship in all its forms. Gary S.
