Admissions The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) accepts applications to the doctoral programs from any person who possesses, or is in the process of completing, a master’s degree from a regionally accredited university. Doctoral applicants should have a minimum GPA of 3.5 in their master’s degree program. Applicants must possess a master’s degree before beginning doctoral studies. Department of Family Therapy faculty members carefully consider a number of factors when choosing applicants for the Ph.D. program. These include knowledge of systemic theory as it relates to various approaches of family therapy, level of prior clinical experience, evidence of commitment to advanced graduate training in the social sciences, interpersonal style, prior graduate GPA, and professional English writing skills. Applicant review includes a daylong campus interview, by invitation only, on the third Friday of March for the fall term. Program Formats The Ph.D. in Family Therapy is offered residentially and takes five years to complete with a maximum of seven years. Full-time enrollment is considered to be at least 9 credit hours per term and requires year-round enrollment— fall, winter, and summer. Students must be enrolled full time to complete the program within the specified time. Once students begin their dissertation process, they are considered full time when registered for at least 3 credit hours per term. Practicum Ph.D. students will complete a minimum of four practicums in the clinic on their road to accumulating 1,000 client contact hours. Students will also complete a yearlong clinical or research internship. “I guided my studies toward business consulting, and currently work in the area of organization development. My typical day is spent at my job as an internal consultant for a large health care organization. I find myself consulting, coaching, training, and providing platforms for all of the employees for the purpose of helping everyone make the most of their time and energy at work.” Brian Rosenberg, Ph.D. NSU’s Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences Department of Family Therapy “The doctoral program at Nova Southeastern University exceeded all my expectations. By offering an excellent balance between clinical practice and research inquiry, it sharpened my practical skills and awakened my research interests. This experience opened new horizons for exciting careers where research and clinical work become interconnected and inform each other during my practice in clinical and academic settings.” Yulia Watters, Ph.D. NSU’s Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences Department of Family Therapy
