College of Optometry (CO)—Master of Science (M.S.) in Clinical Vision Research 2023–2024 137 Master of Science (M.S.) in Clinical Vision Research NSU’s CO offers the 45-credit Master of Science (M.S.) in Clinical Vision Research program. This program is designed to assist optometrists, optometric educators, optometric students, as well as other health care professionals extend their career opportunities by developing and enhancing their ability to perform clinical vision research. It has both online and on-campus components. Faculty members are nationally recognized scholars, with expertise in teaching, research, and scholarship. This innovative program includes curricula leading to a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Vision Research and an M.S. in Clinical Vision Research. Accommodating the need and desire of most health care professionals to remain in their present location and employment and, at the same time, draw upon a nationally recognized faculty, the Clinical Vision Research Graduate Program offers a unique opportunity through NSU CO’s state-of-the-art, web-based, distance-learning technology. Some of the program requirements may be completed at home or in the office at times convenient to the student, without compromising the student’s career, family, and personal obligations. Curriculum The curriculum is divided into three categories: core courses, specialty track courses, and a thesis. The core courses cover ethics, statistics, experimental design, literature search, proposal writing, and epidemiology. A student can pick two specialty courses from the following tracks: optics, public health, electrodiagnostics, binocular vision, contact lens, low vision, ocular motility, and disease tracks. The thesis is based on a research project designed according to the student’s interest. Each student has an adviser who is an expert in the student’s area of interest and guides the student’s thesis project. At least 7, and as many as 12 semester credit hours are devoted to the preparation of a thesis. The program may be completed on an intensive basis in as short as two years, or up to six calendar years on a part-time basis. Requirements for Graduation The M.S. in Clinical Vision Research is awarded to candidates who have demonstrated to the faculty their ability to meet the standards of the M.S. in Clinical Vision Research program. The degree(s) will be conferred on all candidates who have satisfactorily completed all course and eligibility requirements. To graduate, students must • have satisfactorily completed the 45-credit program of study for the degree within six years • have a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 • have satisfactorily met all financial obligations The Graduate Certificate in Clinical Vision Research is awarded to candidates who have demonstrated to the faculty members their ability to meet the standards of the Clinical Vision Research program.
