COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY • 37 On November 12, 2015, Andrew Morgenstern, O.D., FAAO (Dipl.), a 1999 NSUCO alumnus, was one of 14 outstanding graduates honored at the NSU Distin- guished Alumni Achievement Awards ceremony held at the Grande Oaks Golf Club in Davie, Florida. The Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award, which is the highest and most prestigious honor NSU bestows on its graduates, recognizes alumni who are changing lives and changing the world by demonstrating a record of distinguished service and extraordinary achievement in a particular profession, discipline, organization, or community cause. The award also pays tribute to alum- ni who have great pride in their alma mater and are committed to advancing NSU’s values and goals. “There are many ways to determine the value of a univer- sity,” said George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D, NSU president and chief executive officer. “I believe that one of the most important ways is by what our graduates bring to the communities across the country and around the world after graduation. These honorees make NSU proud.” Morgenstern was honored for his work with wounded warriors at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where his job is to fulfill the mission of the Joint DoD/VA Vision Center of Excellence as the optometric subject matter expert. In regard to leadership, Morgenstern serves as chair of the American Optometric Association New Tech- nology Committee and as president-elect of the Optometric Council on Refractive Technology and the Maryland Optometric Association. During the past three years, he has served as a Boston University Dean’s Advisory Board member. Additionally, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Optometric Association in 2008 and the Distinguished Alumni for Service to the Profession accolade at the Boston University commencement ceremony in 2012. “It is the people that made NSU great and impacted my career in a positive way,” Morgenstern said. “Friends such as Drs. Steven Gorin, Ian Raden, and Bryan Rogoff made the school experience more fun than I could have ever hoped for. The professors were, and still are, world class.
