ONE NSU MAGAZINE NSU cadets prepare for a rappelling exercise atop the Alvin Sherman Library. CORALS DONATED TO TEXAS A&M On September 18, approximately 300 corals from NSU’s coral nursery were transferred to the Texas State Aquarium for research and restoration thanks to a partnership between NSU and Texas A&M University—Corpus Christi (TAMU—CC). This initiative marks one of the largest out-of-state coral transfers led by NSU’s Halmos College of Arts and Sciences. Corals are delicate creatures, so NSU and TAMU—CC exercised extreme care during the transfer. Each coral was individually packaged in fresh seawater with added oxygen, placed in protective cases, and transported in insulated, padded coolers. To ensure their health, the corals spent the shortest time possible in transit, traveling by van from NSU to a nearby private airport, before being flown to Texas. TAMU—CC will use some of these corals in a turbidity experiment to study the effects of sediment from Port Everglades on coral health. ROTC VISIT INCLUDES RAPPELLING DEMONSTRATION U.S. Army Major General Antonio Munera, who leads the U.S. Army Cadet Command’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), visited NSU’s Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus. During his visit, Munera met with ROTC cadets, thanked them for their service, and told them about his plans to expand the program at NSU. The cadets staged an afternoon rappelling demonstration for Munera from atop the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center. HCA HEALTHCARE FUNDS CUTTING-EDGE LABS HCA Healthcare donated $500,000 to NSU to help establish clinical simulation labs for the Ron and Kathy Assaf College of Nursing’s new nurse anesthesiology program. The gift is part of HCA Healthcare’s $10-million, three-year pledge to support historically Black colleges and universities and Hispanic-serving institutions. With the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology forecasting a shortage of 12,500 providers by 2033, the donation will support faculty initiatives, fund essential equipment, and aid in creating simulation labs at NSU’s Palm Beach and Fort Myers campuses for nurse anesthesiology training. 62
