ONE NSU MAGAZINE FUN FACTS ABOUT FORT LAUDERDALE/DAVIE (AND FLORIDA) • The Davie Woman’s club, established in 1922, created one of the first libraries in Broward County. • If you stand on the Davie Road bridge, you can see the entire C-11 South New River Canal, which was the first canal created in Davie. • It is illegal in Florida to tie your elephant, alligator, or goat to a parking meter without paying. • Parts of NSU are said to be haunted. Many students have taken the ghost tours the Zadak sisters offer and shared stories about their eerie experiences in certain buildings on the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus. • Reggae legend Bob Marley lived in Davie for a while. • You can grow practically any citrus or tropical fruit in Davie because of the high-grade soil there. • Fort Lauderdale is known as the Venice of America due to its extensive canal system. • More than 70 years ago, a group of wild African vervet monkeys established a colony in the mangrove forests near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Today’s monkeys are descendants of individuals that escaped from the former Dania Chimpanzee Farm, where they had been imported from Africa for medical research. 57
