Nursing Student Handbook 2024-2025

Ron and Kathy Assaf College of Nursing (ACON) 2024–2025 128 Social Media Social media outlets are a great tool when used in a way that fosters learning and enhances the educational experience of its participants. The ACON prohibits the posting of messages or photos that incite lawless action, are an expression of intent to inflict physical, emotional harm upon members of the college’s students or faculty body, or that are a violation of any law prohibiting discrimination, defamation, or are otherwise unlawful. Students are prohibited from uploading text, messages, chats, or photos of course and exam content, faculty-generated course content, simulation scenarios, or educational materials that are used exclusively for the educational purposes of courses offered at the ACON. Students are also prohibited from posting videos/photos of patients, patient care areas, or any other patient care materials. Similarly, any videos or photos that capture students, who are actively enrolled in the ACON, engaging in the aforementioned activities, especially while in college uniform, will be subject to sanctions delineated in the student handbook. Usage of the name and/or signage of the college or university in any of these contexts is also prohibited. Drug Screening The ACON maintains affiliation agreements with many health care institutions. These affiliation agreements allow for student clinical experiences within these institutions. All ACON programs are clinical, and all students are subject to drug screenings. Random drug screening may be required by the ACON, and/or at the request of these institutions, prior to entering the facility and throughout students’ tenure as ACON students. Additionally, students may be required to undergo a drug screening if their behavior causes concern. Students will be responsible for payment for additional drug screenings due to diluted/random urine specimens, repeat screenings, or those requested by outside institutions. There are circumstances in which students may need to take over-the-counter or prescribed medications that have the potential to impair their performance or personal behavior. As such, all students are responsible for being aware of the effect these medications may have on performance and drug screenings. If a student uses a medication that has the potential to impair performance or influence a drug screen, the student may be unable to participate in clinical activities until they have been cleared by the program and/or clinical affiliate. This may extend program length. Drug Policy—Zero Tolerance The ACON has a zero tolerance policy for drug use. Please also see the Drug-Free Schools and Campuses policies listed in the NSU Student Handbook. This includes the unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession, or use of illegal drugs; controlled substances without a prescription; and the use of, or being under the influence of, alcohol while on rotation/clinical experience or in class. Should a student receive a positive drug or alcohol screen, the student may be administered a repeat screening, and if the positive result remains, the student will be referred to the CSP for disciplinary action, which may include expulsion/dismissal from the student’s program and the ACON. In accordance with the Drug-Free Schools and Campuses policies listed in the NSU Student Handbook, the ACON’s prohibition on illegal drug use extends to medical marijuana.
