Ron and Kathy Assaf College of Nursing (ACON) 2025–2026 128 will be referred to the CSP for further action, including the evaluation of potential violations of NSU and/or ACON policy. Should a student have a valid prescription for the medication, it will be reviewed by the ACON prior to making the decision to refer the matter to the CSP. Please note that both NSU’s Drug-Free Schools and Campuses Policy and ACON’s Zero Tolerance Drug Policy prohibit the use and possession of marijuana regardless of whether a valid prescription exists. *In the event of an inconclusive or diluted test result, the student will be required to submit to an additional urine drug and/or alcohol screen at the direction of the ACON. Should the repeat test be inconclusive and/or diluted, the student will be placed on an administrative break in enrollment, until such time as the student can present a negative drug/alcohol screen, and will be referred to the CSP for review and possible disciplinary action. Drug Policy—Zero Tolerance The ACON has a zero tolerance policy for drug use. Please also see the Drug-Free Schools and Campuses policies listed in the NSU Student Handbook. This includes the unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession, or use of illegal drugs; controlled substances without a prescription; and the use of, or being under the influence of, alcohol while on rotation/clinical experience or in class. Should a student receive a positive drug or alcohol screen, the student will be referred to the CSP for disciplinary action, which may include expulsion/dismissal from the student’s program and the ACON. The student may be administered a repeat screening at the discretion of the college. In accordance with the Drug-Free Schools and Campuses policies listed in the NSU Student Handbook, the ACON’s prohibition on illegal drug use extends to medical marijuana. The manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession or use of cannabidiol (CBD) derived from marijuana is also prohibited by the ACON. Students should be aware that some CBD products may contain unlawful tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and/or THC levels that are higher than what is advertised. Therefore, the consumption or use of CBD products may result in unanticipated THC-positive drug screenings. In accordance with this policy, if a student tests positive for THC on a drug screening, the student will be referred to the CSP for disciplinary action, which may include expulsion/dismissal from the student’s program and the ACON. If a student reports to the academic program for help with a personal drug or alcohol concern prior to being informed of an impending drug test, the student will be required to report to the program director for referral to the NSU Student Assistance Program. This office is located on the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus, in the Student Affairs Building (3rd floor). For the regional campuses, students are able to have virtual appointments. The student will only be permitted to report to class or a rotation/clinical experience if cleared by the NSU Student Assistance Program and the associate dean/designee of the ACON. Disclosures of drug/alcohol screening results may also be made to Intervention Project for Nurses (IPN) or the Board of Nursing, when appropriate. The ACON utilizes a third-party laboratory company to process drug and alcohol screening tests. The urine sample and/or specimen collected will be maintained by the laboratory company for a one-year period of time from the date it is received by the laboratory company, and then will be discarded. Requests for the urine sample must be made by the student directly to the laboratory company within this time frame. NSU is not responsible for the maintenance, production, or analysis of the urine sample and/or specimen for the presence of drugs or alcohol. The student pays for repeats.
