Nursing Student Handbook 2024-2025

Ron and Kathy Assaf College of Nursing (ACON) 2024–2025 110 Once admitted and accepted, all students in the postgraduate certificate program are required to complete courses for their selected area of study or concentration. Waivers for didactic coursework and/or clinical hours will be based on a formal gap analysis. Students will be required to submit official transcripts, syllabi, and other materials for the gap analysis. Students may be required to take additional courses at the graduate level based upon the student’s gap analysis. Inquiries and questions related to degree requirements should be directed to the associate dean or program director. After successful completion of the postgraduate certificate, graduates are eligible to apply to take the certification examination specific to their specialty. Certificate students do not attend graduation since they have already obtained an M.S.N. degree. Leave from Studies It is recognized that students may need to temporarily discontinue all coursework (which includes clinical rotations) either voluntarily or by administrative action. This can occur through a leave of absence (LOA) or an administrative break in enrollment. 1. Leave of Absence (LOA) A leave of absence (LOA) is a university-approved temporary period of time during which the student is not in attendance but is not considered withdrawn from the university. Students who experience extenuating and unavoidable circumstances that prevent them from maintaining an active status through continuous enrollment must consult with their ACON program director to determine whether their circumstances warrant an LOA request and to discuss the impacts of an approved LOA on their degree/ program completion, academic standing, course grades, and conditions for return. All students should be directed immediately to financial aid regarding the impact of the LOA on financial aid eligibility. An LOA request must be submitted at least 14 days prior to the beginning of the semester/term for the leave. An approved LOA may be granted for up to 180 days within a 12-month period. For more details, including the Leave of Absence Request Form, visit the Office of the University Registrar’s website at nova.edu/registrar /policies/leave-of-absence-policy.html. The student should be told by the program director that, upon return from leave, the student will need to meet at the start of the term with financial aid and report this meeting to the program director. A student is not eligible to take an LOA if the student has not completed at least one full semester at NSU. In this situation, standard withdrawal or incomplete policies that are appropriate should be followed (see below). All leave time is counted toward the graduation requirement of completing the program within 150 percent of the time for the program’s curriculum, starting from the date of matriculation into the ACON or, for transfer students, the date of matriculation into their original college of nursing. 2. Administrative Break in Enrollment An administrative break in enrollment may be voluntary or may be imposed by the dean. A student requesting a voluntary administrative break in enrollment must complete the proper paperwork Administrative Break (AB) Form obtained and guided by the program director.
