27 NURSING SHORTAGE The Florida Hospital Association and the Safety Net Hospital Alliance of Florida report that Florida could be short 59,100 nurses in the next 15 years. Matching funds, grants, scholarships, and full-time employment offers are available to students of NSU’s Ron and Kathy Assaf College of Nursing. Once students graduate and pass their state boards, they will have a job in nursing. In the meantime, special programs like NSU’s recent Nurse Residency Expo hosted at the Alan B. Levan | NSU Broward Center of Innovation allow students to learn about different nurse residency programs directly from such employers as Memorial Health Care System, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Holy Cross Health, Broward Health, Baptist Health South Florida, HCA Florida Healthcare, and Cleveland Clinic. BREAST CANCER IN BROWARD COUNTY Researchers from NSU’s AutoNation Institute for Breast Cancer Research and Care have found that Broward County’s rate of advanced breast cancer exceeds both state and national averages. This is even though advanced breast cancer cases have dropped nationally thanks to early detection. The research team’s next charge is to uncover why. Scan for article link. SOCIETY FOR SPORTS NEUROSCIENCE The Society for Sports Neuroscience is the only nonprofit academic society that brings together scientists and practitioners to further research on athletic performance, brain health, and well-being. Its founders include faculty researchers from NSU’s College of Psychology and Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences, who also started the nation’s flagship conference and academic journal for sports neuroscience. These initiatives have sparked new collaborations across the fields of exercise, nutrition, brain injury, genetics, sport psychology, sleep, cognition, and performance. Scan for more.
