KPCOM Student Handbook 2025-2026

135 b. Emergency Medicine Core Rotation The Emergency Medicine Rotation must be four weeks long. During those four weeks, students must comply with the duty times offered by the site/preceptor but must complete, at minimum, 14 12-hour shifts to fulfill requirement. Any remaining time during the four weeks may be used for board study time or academic preparation for the ER COMAT. The four-week ER block may not be shortened to start another rotation. The Emergency Medicine Core Rotation block will be assigned by the Office of Clinical Education. Students may not swap Emergency Medicine Core Rotation blocks. 4. M4 Selective and Elective Rotations a. Elective Rotations Students are responsible for setting up their own elective rotations. These rotations may be conducted in almost any site of the students’ choosing; however, the designated preceptor must be board certified in the discipline indicated, and hold an active medical license with no restrictions in the appropriate state or jurisdiction. Elective rotations must be secured and agreed upon by the student and the site and/or preceptor far enough in advance to allow the Office of Clinical Education’s approval process. Many elective rotation sites require legal documentation between their institution and the KPCOM. Legal communications take time, and if not planned well, may lead to the inability to rotate at a desired site. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure all paperwork for elective rotations are completed in a timely manner. M4 students MUST apply to the Office of Clinical Education (your assigned class coordinator) for approval of any selective or elective rotation at least 30 days prior to the start of the rotation. All rotations that require an affiliation agreement MUST be submitted at least 60 days in advance of the start of that rotation. Failure to comply with this time line may result in denial of the rotation, no credit for the rotation, failure of the rotation, and referral to Student Progress Committee. An M4 student can only participate in an elective or selective rotation that is approved by the Office of Clinical Education. Approval of a rotation is at the discretion of the Office of Clinical Education. b. “Twelve-Week Same Discipline Rule” for Elective Rotations Electives can be in any of the recognized disciplines of medicine as identified in the 2025–2026 Student Academic Catalog listing of clinical rotations in the KPCOM Course of Study section. However, a student cannot set up more than twelve weeks of elective time in the same exact discipline of medicine or surgery (the subspecialties of a core specialty of medicine or surgery are considered different disciplines). Students may utilize elective time to pursue patient care, research, public health, academic medicine, or international opportunities. c. Selective Rotations Students must complete one selective block in a rural or urban setting with heightened medical needs; one selective block in general internal medicine or an internal medicine subspecialty; and one selective block in surgery, either general surgery or a surgical subspecialty.
