Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine (KPCOM)—Osteopathic Medicine Program 2023–2024 134 Final Distribution of Assignments The final list of core campus site assignments will be distributed to the students after the writtenpetition opportunity. All assignments are considered final after this date. 3. M3 and M4 Core Rotations a. All Core Rotations, Oher than Emergency Medicine Core rotations are assigned by the Office of Clinical Education in four-week blocks. Core rotations may not be changed by the student. See Clinical Rotations/Core Clinical Campus above and the HPD Catalog for rotation information. If the student calls the clinical site in an attempt to change a core rotation assignment, the student will be referred to the KPCOM Student Progress Committee, and a disciplinary action may be taken, up to, and including, dismissal from the college. b. Emergency Medicine Core Rotation The Emergency Medicine Rotation must be four weeks long. During those four weeks, students must comply with the duty times offered by the site/preceptor but must complete, at minimum, 14 12-hour shifts to fulfill requirement. Any remaining time during the four weeks may be used for board study time or academic preparation for the ER COMAT. The four-week ER block may not be shortened to start another rotation. The Emergency Medicine Core Rotation block will be assigned by the Office of Clinical Education. Students may not swap Emergency Medicine Core Rotation blocks. 4. M4 Selective and Elective Rotations a. Elective Rotations Students are responsible for setting up their own elective rotations. These rotations may be conducted in almost any site of the students’ choosing; however, the designated preceptor must be board certified in the discipline indicated, and hold an active medical license with no restrictions in the appropriate state or jurisdiction. Elective rotations must be secured and agreed upon by the student and the site and/or preceptor far enough in advance to allow the Office of Clinical Education’s approval process. Many elective rotation sites require legal documentation between their institution and the KPCOM. Legal communications take time, and if not planned well, may lead to the inability to rotate at a desired site. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure all paperwork for elective rotations are completed in a timely manner. M4 students MUST apply to the Office of Clinical Education for approval of any selective or elective rotation no later than 30 days prior to the start of the rotation, and preferably 60 days in advance of the start of that rotation. Failure to comply with this time line may result in no credit received for the rotation, failure of the rotation, and referral to Student Progress Committee. Approval of a rotation is at the discretion of the Office of Clinical Education.
