462 Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences—Department of Speech-Language Pathology Department of Speech-Language Pathology The Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (M.S.) Program focuses on training speech-language pathologists to provide a full range of services to clients with communication and swallowing/feeding disorders in a variety of settings. The program provides scientifically based academic and clinical curricula to foster critical thinking and application of best practices. Course content is research based and prepares the student to meet the requirements for the Certificate of Clinical Competence awarded by the American Speech-LanguageHearing Association (ASHA). Accreditation The Master of Science (M.S.) education program in speechlanguage pathology residential and distance education at Nova Southeastern University is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2200 Research Boulevard, #310, Rockville, MD 20850, 800-638-8255 or (301) 296-5700. Admissions Requirements Prior to matriculation, applicants must have earned a minimum of a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a preferred minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 grading scale. They must also have documented proof of the completion of 25 hours of guided clinical observation, as defined by ASHA. All qualifying applicants will have an application interview. Once admitted, all students must successfully complete a mandatory orientation. Prior to matriculation, applicants must also have successfully completed (meaning, earned grades of B- or better) all of the following Communication Sciences and Disorders prerequisite courses: • A n introductory course in the field of communication sciences and disorders (3 semester hours) This requirement is waived if the applicant has a baccalaureate degree in CSD or an SLPA curriulum. • A natomy and Physiology of the Speech and Hearing Mechanism (3 semester hours) • Phonetics (3 semester hours) • Neuroanatomy and Physiology (3 semester hours) • Speech and Language Development (3 semester hours) • Audiology and Aural Rehabilitation (3 semester hours) In addition to the above CSD courses, applicants must have completed the following four ASHA Knowledge Outcome courses with earned grades of C- or better: • Statistics (3 semester hours) This must be a stand-alone course, not part of a research methods course. • Biological Sciences (3 semester hours) • Physics or Chemistry (3 semester hours) • Social/Behavioral Sciences (3 semester hours) For more information, see the ASHA program website under Standard IV: Knowledge Outcomes. International Students International students living in the United States must present verification of student visa or residency status and must attend courses in person at the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus. Due to the limited availability of ASHA-certified supervisors in other countries, students who live outside of the United States will not be eligible for admission to the M.S. program. Furthermore, students accepted to the program may not relocate outside of the United States before the completion of the degree. Application Procedures All prospective students must complete an application through the Communication Sciences and Disorders Application Services (CSDCAS) (csdcas.liaisoncas.com). Admissions decisions are based on the applicant’s academic achievements earned at regionally accredited institutions, or at an equivalent, based on an evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluation. The evaluation must include a course-by-course analysis, listing all course subjects with United States semester credits, and a cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. Applicants may be provisionally admitted based on a preliminary review of unofficial transcripts and/or programspecific admissions requirements.
