PSYCHIATRY This program is structured to provide an osteopathic resident with advanced and concentrated training in psychiatry and to prepare him/her for examination leading to board certification in this discipline. Applicants must be graduates of an American Osteopathic Association (AOA) accredited college of osteo- pathic medicine and be a member of the AOA. The strengths of the FLDOC/NSU-COM Psychiatry Residency Program are the diversity and vol- ume of patient care delivered at FLDOC facilities. Residents are exposed to clinical variety and the latest in technical research both at the university and at the FLDOC. Exposure to an exhaustive range of both acute and chronic illness is part of the excellent training. This exposure ensures each physician will be competent in all facets of general psychiatry. CORRECTIONAL MEDICINE The Correctional Medicine Fellowship is a two-year program, which includes the opportunity to attain an M.P.H. degree along with the certificate for the fel- lowship. This program is accredited by the AOA and, for osteopathic physicians, would lead to the opportunity to sit for the board exam. For M.D.s, the program is not accredited as there is not yet a board certifying exam for M.D.s, but it does lead to the M.P.H. degree and to the certificate. The fellow spends time in several different types of correctional facilities, jails, and prisons (maximum, medium, women’s, and mental health) as well as the prison inpatient hospital facility. There is exposure to juvenile facilities and to administrative duties. The fellowship’s goal is to train leaders for the correctional medicine field. SPORTS MEDICINE This program is designed to provide the osteopathic subspecialty resident with concentrated advanced training in osteopathic sports medicine. Sports medi- cine consists of practitioners certified in family medicine, neuromusculoskeletal medicine, physical medicine, rehabilitation, orthopedics, physical therapy, nu- trition, sport psychology and sports medicine. This group of practitioners uses an osteopathic approach to sports medicine. Practitioners offer a broad spectrum of nonsurgical modalities, including OMT, injections, strength and conditioning, and rehabilitation to address musculoskeletal disorders. The de- partment addresses all aspects of medical care for the athlete. It is a one-year post-residency fellowship in sports medicine, open to AOA primary care board- certified physicians. GERIATRICS FP/IM/FM/B The Geriatrics Fellowship is a comprehensive, interprofessional clinical and scholarly program in the ambulatory, nursing home, hospital, and rehabilitation setting with the added benefit of an active Geriatrics Education Center (GEC). The geriatrics fellowship will comprise 12 one-month rotations and will usually commence at the start of NSU-COM’s academic year on July 1 and be com- pleted by June 30 of the following year. Rotations may be divided into two elec- tive rotations subject to the approval of the program director. The specialty rotations include neurology, geriatric psychiatry, urology, rehabilitation medi- cine, palliative and hospice care, as well as wound care. A. NSU Geriatrics Clinic Training will occur in the established geriatrics ambulatory clinic based at NSU’s Sanford L. Ziff Health Care Center. Electronic health records are utilized at the clinic. The geriatric fellow will work with health professions such as pharmacology and gero-psychology with the focus being on an interprofessional team approach. Core geriatric faculty members work along with the geriatric fellow to participate in the interprofessional Balance and Fall Prevention Clinic, which conducts patient examinations twice a month. During certain clinic days, the fellow will participate in other specialty clinics that may include the pharmacy anticoagulation clinic, hearing and balance clinic, and speech pathology clinic. B. Nursing Homes 1. Covenant Village Care Center is a continuous retirement community with a 60-bed nursing home, an assisted-living facility, and senior living apartments. The department chair is also the medical director of this long-term care facility. The fellow will be trained in the care of nursing home residents, regulations, medical directorship, and continuous quality improvement. This will be done when the fellow participates with the medical director at question-and-answer meetings and conducts a quality improvement project under supervision. 2. Avante of Boca Raton —a 144-bed facility—is another skilled nursing facility that will be the fellow’s main site and where he or she will follow a panel of nursing home patients on a regular basis. This facility has a sub-acute and a long-term ventilator unit that provides an intense clinical experience and opportunity to interact with pulmonologists and respiratory therapists, in addition to the usual disciplines. 3. Alexander Nininger State Veteran’s Nursing Home has been a longstanding partner with the geriatrics department. It is located in Pembroke Pines, has 120 beds, and is one of six state nursing homes exclusively for veterans. It has a skilled unit as well as a dementia treatment section. The fellow will train at this facility. C. Acute Care Institution: The geriatric fellow will perform trauma service consultations, as well as inpatient geriatric consultations under the supervision of the core faculty members. D. Geriatric Education Center and Teaching: NSU has a federally funded geriatric education center called the Florida Coastal Geriatric Resources, Education, and Training Center. Consequently, the fellow is an integral part of the center’s academic, research, and teaching activities, which involve members from up to 12 disciplines. The fellow provides training to seniors in the Lifelong Learning Institute, affiliated retirement centers, and in-service training to nursing staff in the long- term care facilities. In addition, the fellow is involved in NSU and other community health fairs. E. Leadership: The fellow plays a leading role in the mentoring of students and resident members of the Geriatrics Interest Club, which receives support from the American Geriatrics Society. FORENSIC PATHOLOGY Forensic pathology is the subspecialty of pathology that attends to the medicolegal investigation of death. This subspecialty provides extensive train- ing relative to the investigation and identification of natural and unnatural causes of death under which there may be medicolegal aspects and outcomes. The Broward County Medical Examiner and Trauma Services Division’s Foren- sic Pathology Program is structured to provide an osteopathic pathologist with advanced and concentrated training in forensic pathology and to prepare him/her for examination leading to certification in this discipline. The Broward County Medical Examiner and Trauma Services Division conducts over 1,700 medicolegal examinations and autopsies per year, with approximately one half of the deaths due to immediate and direct physical or chemical injury. The scope of the cases offers every opportunity to obtain the required training. CEME • PAGE 13 Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine GME Programs
