Each major correctional institution has a varying requirement for health services, and inmates are assigned according to their medical needs. Several institutions have specific psychiatric designa- tions. Lake Correctional Institution and Zephyrhills Correctional Institution have purpose-built mental health units, including acute crisis intervention, step-down facilities, and long-term care. There is a significant volume of inpatient and out- patient psychiatric care. Lowell Correctional Institution serves as the psychiatric facility for female offenders. There are five reception centers for receiving and evaluating inmates as they flow into the Florida Department of Corrections (FLDOC). The four male institutions—Northwest Florida Reception Center, Reception Medical Center, Central Florida Reception Center, and South Florida Reception Center—are co-located with high-level medical and psychiatric medical facilities. The one female reception center—Lowell Correctional Facility—also has a multipronged health and psychiatric care mission. All the facilities of the Florida Department of Corrections are accredited by the American Correctional Association Commission on Accreditation in Cor- rections, which includes a mandatory evaluation and accreditation of the med- ical services.
